Metagenomics, the sequencing of DNA collected from an entire microbial community, enables the study of natural microbial consortia in their native habitats. Metagenomics studies produce huge volumes of data, including both the sequences themselves and metadata describing their abundance, assembly, predicted functional characteristics and environmental parameters.

We describe a novel application for structured search in scientific digital libraries. The ACL Anthology Searchbench is meant to become a publicly available research tool to query the content of the ACL Anthology. The application provides search in both its bibliographic metadata and semantically analyzed full textual content.

The MyLifeBits shell is the main user interface. It allows queries to be viewed as a list, variable sized thumbnails, and a timeline. It enables refinement or pivoting according to metadata and links as described in the following section. It provides for the creation of text and voice comments. For example, any number of selected items may be commented on using the annotation function with a simple button or right click operation (comments may be text, voice, or any file). Similarly, these items can be assigned to collections.

Memex, with links and comments holding a central role, served as our blueprint for MyLifeBits.
