Ebook "Plant-based remediation processes (Soil biology, Volume 35)" is on the recent advances of technologies using green plants for remediation of various metals and metalloids. Topics include biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution, amendments of higher uptake of toxic metals, transport of heavy metals in plants, and toxicity mechanisms. Further chapters discuss agro-technological methods for minimizing pollution while improving soil quality, transgenic approaches to heavy metal remediation and present protocols for metal remediation via in vitro root cultures.

Ebook "Metal toxicity in plants: Perception, signaling and remediation" is to present the most recent advances in this field, mainly concerning the uptake and translocation of heavy metals in plants, mechanisms of toxicity, perception of metal and regulation of cell response under metal stress. Another key feature of this book is related to the studies on signaling and remediation processes in recent years, which have taken advantage of recent technological advances including "omic" approaches.

Used lead-acid battery recycling activities in Minh Khai handicraft village, Chi Dao commune, Van Lam district, Hung Yen province, Vietnam has markedly increased the lead (Pb) content in paddy soil. Reducing the mobility of lead and lead accumulation in rice plants/plain rice are major priorities to reduce the impacts of lead in paddy soil.

The present review tries to bridge an existing gap in literature – huge no. of research material is available of the technological advancements and applications of nanomaterials, paving the path for future research in this area, yet very limited information is available on their possible toxicity of living forms (plants, animals, humans alike) as well as the environment.

The results demonstrate that the PM10 mass collected were higher than those reported by the local governmental agencies and the PMs are mainly constituted by hematite and quartz. EDS analysis showed the presence of Fe, Si, Mg, Al, Zi, Ca, and emerging metallic contaminants, such as Ba and Ti, in environmental samples.

Heavy metals are hazardous pollutants for humans, animals and plants, when their threshold concentration exceeds. Tobacco can accumulate higher concentrations of heavy metals, and the genotypic differences of tobacco in heavy metal uptake and their growth responses have not been clearly examined. In this study, the effects of nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) on phytoremediation capabilities were tested in four local Oriental tobacco cultivars (Basma, Akhisar, Sarıbağlar and Dibek).

Cocondensation and postfunctionalization methods were employed to synthesize a mesoporous silica with large surface area (795.1 ± 1.1 m2 g −1 ) modified with 4-amino-5-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol, which was successfully applied to adsorb and preconcentrate Cu(II), Co(II), and Cd(II) from aqueous media. Infrared spectroscopy of the adsorbent material demonstrated N-H stretching bonds related to primary amines existing in the ligand molecule, elemental analysis revealed the presence of 0.

Low-cost activated carbon (AC) samples obtained from waste coffee grounds were used for CO2 and CH4 adsorption. ACs were prepared by chemical activation and carbonized at three different temperatures. AC carbonized at 800◦C showed a relatively high surface area (582.92 m2 g−1) and high adsorption capacities of 2.6 mmol g−1 and 1.1 mmol g−1 at 25◦C for CO2 and CH4, respectively. Adsorbent samples were prepared by loading of Fe3+ metal ions onto ACs and their adsorption capacities were compared with those of nonloaded ACs.

The results showed that Pb was highly toxic to D. carinata and harmful to freshwater algae Scenedesmus sp. Based on the observed high sensitivity with Pb, D. carinata is a potential bioindicator for the assessment of Pb pollution in the Sai Gon River. While lead-tolerance alga Scenedesmus sp. calls for further investigation on metal uptake capacity and utilization in the Pb contaminated water treatment.

Metal tolerance is often an integrative result of metal uptake and distribution, which are fine-tuned by a network of signaling cascades and metal transporters. Thus, with the goal of advancing the molecular understanding of such metal homeostatic mechanisms, comparative RNAseq-based transcriptome analysis was conducted to dissect differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in maize roots exposed to cadmium (Cd) stress.

The obtained results indicated that the pomelo fruit peel is a potential biosorbent to uptake heavy toxic metals and organic molecules from aqueous solutions. Therefore, in this work, the study is extended to Ni(II) adsorption onto the pomelo fruit peel. The pHsolution, adsorption time, and initial Ni(II) concentration, all of which affect the Ni(II) adsorption, are examined. Some common isotherm and kinetic models are fit to the experimental data to understand the nature of the uptake.

The calculations showed that the results are comparable to the best MOFs for the hydrogen storage up to date. The results also elucidated that the gravimetric hydrogen uptakes depend on the special surface area and pore volume of the MIL-88s. These important structural features, if properly improved, lead to an increase in the capability of hydrogen storage in MIL-88s.

The present study was envisaged to check the physico-chemical properties of effluents being treated at CETPs and to isolate indigenous heavy metal tolerant bacteria for their subsequent utilization for heavy metal uptake. Effluent samples were collected from two CETPs located in Ludhiana and Jalandhar and were analyzed for their physico-chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and pH) and heavy metal profile using Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma-Emission Spectroscopy (ICAP-AES).

Mineral deficiency mostly zinc is a well-documented problem in food and forage crops affecting the crop production and subsequently the human and animal health. Oat (Avena sativa L.) is winter crop in many parts of the world and is used as multipurpose crop for grain and forage. Oat is sensitive to Zn, which is major dry fodder and thereby causes Zn deficiency in animals.

Accelerated exploitation of oil and gas resources planned and implemented by ONGC and BGEIPL in west coast offshore region would result into stress particularly on marine environment. The long term physical, chemical and biological changes due to routine discharges from offshore installations can best be assessed through a study on accumulation of hydrocarbons and heavy metals in fishes, plankton and sediments which together form biotic and abiotic components of marine environment.

The present study was envisaged with the objective to isolate indigenous chromate tolerant bacteria from effluents and their subsequent utilization for chromium uptake or reduction. Samples were collected from two different Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs), located in Ludhiana (sample 1) and Jalandhar (sample 2). In both the samples, chromium was found to be the dominant metal contaminant. A total of 10 morphologically distinct isolates were tested for their tolerance to chromium in terms of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Cr required for complete inhibition of growth.

Root-to-shoot translocation of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) depends on the concentrations of both metals in the medium. A previous study on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) pointed to the contribution of NtZIP1, NtZIP2, NtZIP4 and NtIRT1-like in the regulation of this phenomenon.

Effluent borne heavy metals in soil ecosystem can result into phytotoxic levels impair plant growth. Long-term accumulation of toxic metals in soils and their uptake by crop plants has a high potential for phytotoxicity besides entering into the food chain. Soils in both the districts were slightly acidic to neutral. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) was highest in maize wheat production system and least in pasture system in soils of district Samba, and whereas least was observed in rice wheat system in soils of Kathua.
