Influence of the austenitic stainless steel microstructure on the void swelling under ion irradiation
To understand the role of different metallurgical parameters on the void formation mechanisms, various austenitic stainless steels were elaborated and irradiated with heavy ions. Two alloys, in several metallurgical conditions (15Cr/15Ni–Ti and 15Cr/25Ni–Ti), were irradiated in the JANNUS-Saclay facility at 600 °C with 2 MeV Fe2+ ions up to 150 dpa.

Friction drilling is a green hole-making process that zealously utilizes the heat generated from the friction between the rotating conical tool and workpiece to create a bushing without generating chip. The difficult-to-machine materials with unique metallurgical properties have been developed to meet the demands of extreme applications.

Toxic heavy metals, i.e. copper (II), lead (II) and cadmium (II), can be removed from water by metallurgical solid wastes, i.e. bauxite waste red muds and coal fly ashes acting as sorbents. These heavy-metal-loaded solid wastes may then be solidified by adding cement to a durable concrete mass assuring their safe disposal. Thus, toxic metals in water have been removed by sorption on to inexpensive solid waste materials as a preliminary operation of ultimate fixation. Metal uptake (sorption) and release (desorption) have been investigated by thermostatic batch experiments.

This chapter provides classification of metal forming processes based on types of forces applied onto metals. • Mechanics of metal forming will be outlined to understand stress criterion for plastic deformation. • Differences between hot and cold working will be highlighted and advantages-disadvantages of hot and cold working will be given. • Effects of deformation speed and friction on metal working process will be included.
