Ebook "Tight junctions" highlight the importance of understanding TJ physiology in order to develop effective strategies for the treatment of pathological conditions such as cancer and autoimmune diseases. The first chapter of this book describes the evolution of the transporting epithelium from primitive metazoans to mammalian epithelia. Then, Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 review the characteristics and functionality of difi^erent proteins of theTJ studied in cell culture models, natural epithelia, mutant mice and heritable human diseases.

Ebook "Animal models in cardiovascular research" will provide information essential to any researcher interested in using animal models for cardiovascular research, or any research which requires normal cardiovascular function. The opening chapter includes more information on the cardiovascular effects of post-operative analgesia and will address the recognition of pain behavior in species commonly used in research settings, particularly rats and mice.

Murine is the most abundantly used as laboratory animal models. There has been a tremendous amount of research including; their evolution, growth, physiology, disease modeling as well as genomic mapping. Rats and mice are the most widely used among them. Although both rats and mice fall under the same category still both are different a lot too.

Emergence of both viral zoonoses from bats and diseases that threaten bat populations has highlighted the necessity for greater insights into the functioning of the bat immune system. Particularly when considering hibernating temperate bat species, it is important to understand the seasonal dynamics associated with immune response.

The utility of experiments in model organisms such as mice to provide insights into human health and disease depends on the similarity of the fundamental physiological, cellular, and molecular processes across species. A new study helps resolve a controversy about determinants of gene expression variability and might facilitate the effective translation of research results across species.

Cytosine methylation is a stable epigenetic modification of DNA that plays an important role in both normal physiology and disease. Most diseases exhibit some degree of sexual dimorphism, but the extent to which epigenetic states are influenced by sex is understudied and poorly understood. To address this deficit we studied DNA methylation patterns across multiple reduced representation bisulphite sequencing datasets (from liver, heart, brain, muscle and spleen) derived from isogenic male and female mice.

The circadian rhythms regulate physiological functions and metabolism. Circadian Time (CT) is a unit to quantify the rhythm of endogenous circadian clock, independent of light influence. To understand the gene expression changes throughout CT, C57BL/6 J mice were maintained under constant darkness (DD) for 6 weeks, and the liver samples were collected starting at 9:00 AM (CT1), and every 4 h in a 24-h cycle (CT5, CT9, CT13, CT17 and CT21).

MicroRNAs play an important role in many fundamental biological and pathological processes. Defining the microRNAs profile underlying the processes by beneficial and detrimental lifestyles, including caloric restriction (CR), exercise and high-fat diet (HF), is necessary for understanding both normal physiology and the pathogenesis of metabolic disease.

Far infrared radiation (FIR) has been widely used to treat chronic diseases and symptoms; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. As gut microbiota (GM) markedly impact the host’s physiology, making GM a potential target for the therapeutic evaluation of FIR. C57BL/6J mice were exposed to five times of 2 min-FIR exposure on the abdomen, with a two-hour interval of each exposure within one day. Fecal samples were collected on day one and day 25 after the FIR/control treatment, and the extracted fecal DNAs were evaluated using ERIC-PCR and 16S amplicon sequencing.

Thrombospondin-1 gene deficiency worsens the neurological outcomes of traumatic brain injury in mice
Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) is an extracellular matrix protein that plays multiple physiological and pathophysiological roles in the brain. Experimental reports suggest that TSP-1 may have an adverse role in neuronal function recovery under certain injury conditions. However, the roles of TSP-1 in traumatic brain injury (TBI) have not been elucidated.
