Thraustochytrium is a heterotrophic marine microalgae genus belonging to the Labyrinthula class, Thraustochytriaceae (Thraustochytrids) family. Recently, studied results have showed that some species/strains of Thraustochytrium genus are potential candidates to produce biomass rich in lipid containing high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFAs), especially docosahexaenoic (DHA C22: 6 ω-3), carotenoid, extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) and enzymes which play a crucial role in human health.

Seven microalgae strains from samples collected from freshwater lakes in Central Vietnam were isolated and cultivated in BBM medium for investigating their biological characteristics and their applicability. These strains were identified belonging to 6 species, 3 genera of the family Scenedesmaceae, division Chlorophyta.

The aim of this study was to obtain an oil extract from a Bulgarian green microalga strain Coelastrella sp. BGV and to assess its anticancer and apoptogenic activity in vitro against human tumor cells HeLa by means of MTT and fluorescence microscopy analyses. The results showed that the oil extract obtained by a direct extraction using a common vegetable oil reduces proliferation and induces apoptosis in HeLa cells.

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA sequences known as drivers of genome evolution. Their impacts have been widely studied in animals, plants and insects, but little is known about them in microalgae. In a previous study, we compared the genetic polymorphisms between strains of the haptophyte microalga Tisochrysis lutea and suggested the involvement of active autonomous TEs in their genome evolution.

In this work, an isolated strain Chlorella sp. was used to study its capability in sequestration of CO2 in laboratory scale. Results indicated that the Chlorella sp. grew well under a wide range of CO2 concentration from 0.04% to 15% with maximum growth was achieved under CO2 aeration of 15%.

A Chaetoceros strain was successfully isolated to a unialgal state from Giao Thuy mangrove and identified to be of Chaetoceros muelleri species based on morphological properties and 18S rDNA sequence analysis. ASW medium together with 250/00 of salinity was found to be best suitable for the growth of this strain and was applied to its biomass production.

One of the most important factors for carotenoids production is salt; it is therefore important to evaluate the influence of this element on the growth and the capacity of the microalgal cells to the accumulation of carotenoids. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate cell growth and carotenoids production in native Moroccan strains of Dunaliella spp. under laboratory conditions in the presence of a salt stress regime and their ability to produce large cellular and pigment biomass. Certain strains of microalgae known as diatoms were shown, under appropriate conditions, to produce up to 60% of their cellular mass as lipids under certain growth conditions. Acetyl-Co-A carboxylase catalyses the first committed step in the synthesis of fatty acids, i.e., carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA. In present study we have isolated the two species of marine diatoms Odontella aurita and Chaetoceros muelleri from Vellar estuary Parangipettai Southest coast of India and studied the acetyl co-A carboxylase activity at different Si treatment nutrient medium.
