Microbial inoculants as biofertilizer
-
Biofertilizer is immobile, an unclear term. It can simply be established that biofertilizers are identified as plant extracts, composted municipal waste, and various microbial mixtures with unidentified components and chemical fertilizer formulations supplemented with organic compounds. Likewise, the scientific literature has a very open interpretation of the term biofertilizer, on behalf of everything from fertilizers to plant extracts.

A new formulation of effervescent tablets containing microbial consortium was prepared for tomato with an objective to improve its survival and effectiveness. Three agriculturally beneficial microorganisms viz. Azotobacter chroococcum, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus megaterium were used in consortium. Tablets were prepared using wet granulation method using talc or compost as diluent. Effectiveness of these inoculants formulations was studied in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in a greenhouse.

Biologically active product more appropriately called as “microbial inoculants” contains active strength of selective microorganisms like bacteria, algae, fungi; alone or in combination helps in increasing crop productivity by biological nitrogen fixation. Biological nitrogen fixation , the second most important biological process on earth after photosynthesis involves conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonium, a form of nitrogen that can be utilized by plants The rhizobia are a group of Gram-negative bacteria that form speciesspecific symbioses with legume plant.

A field experiment was conducted at the ICAR Research farm Medziphema, Nagaland (25°50′24″N latitude and 93°50′26″E longitude) during the summer season of 2017 with green gram as test crop. Organic manures viz. Farm Yard Manure (FYM) and vermicompost were combined with biofertilizers viz. Rhizobium and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) in different combinations and were evaluated in a Randomized Block Design with three replications.
