Microfluidics systems based on two-phase fluid dynamics have been widely applied from industrial machinery to the aerospace and automotive applications. The systems are designed to handle small volumes of liquids, often in the microliter or even nanoliter range. Droplet-based microfluidics is used for biochemical analysis or materials synthesis as well.

Conventional one-dimensional column-based liquid chromatographic (LC) systems do not offer sufficient separation power for the analysis of complex mixtures. Column-based comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography offers a higher separation power, yet suffers from instrumental complexity and long analysis times.

Development of green approaches have emerged as a challenge that highlight the pressing need for nontoxic solvents, miniaturized method and bio-degradable materials. In this regard, an environmentallyfriendly microfluidic system based on natural deep eutectic solvents (DESs) immobilized in agarose membranes was developed to extract parabens from urine samples for the first time.

In this study, to enhance diagnostic efficiency, we focus on the effect of ion concentration polarization (ICP), an electroosmotic (EO) flow, electrophoretic (EP) velocity, and the selective membrane length upon the DNA preconcentration. The study is conducted using the direct simulation of the ions and DNA transport in the electrokinetic system.

It revealed that the optimal conditions of the device are suitable to effectively separate CTCs from red blood cells (RBCs) within the channel structure, with a high flow rate of 1.5 mL/min, and an electric amplitude as low as 10 Vpp, at the frequency of 1 kHz. The proposed method has shown potential as a simple, easy-to-operate, and low-cost approach enable to enhance the diagnosis systems for cancer detection at early stages.

The significant development in the construction of microscale cell culture platforms and the interest in bioanalytical analysis have recently resulted in the emergence of a new concept of ‘organ-on-a-chip’ systems. Organon-a-chip is a new three-dimensional (3D) in vitro microfabricated unit that contains a multichannel microfluidic cell culture. Even if many informative and useful data are obtained from animal models and in vitro assays, they are still limited for extrapolation to human systems during drug design and development.

Finite element method (FEM) is the most widely used approach in the simulation of micro-nano devices before actual fabrication. Using simulation software, 2D and 3D structures of the device are designed, meshed, and then simulated to optimize their parameters. In this work, we modeled and simulated the hydrodynamic trapping of micro-particle (μP) representing for single-cell in the microfluidic system. Besides, the interaction between μP and fluid, the effect of flow velocity, and the pressure field variation for increasing the trapping efficiency were investigated.

The catalytic exchange of hydrogen isotopes between hydrogen and water has been known to be a very useful process for the separation of tritium from tritiated water. For the process, a highly active hydrophobic catalyst is needed. This study provides an effective fabrication method of size-controlled platinum/poly[styrene-divinylbenzene-tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate] [Pt/poly(SDB-TPGDA)] hydrophobic catalyst beads with a narrow size distribution.

The microfluidic system was fabricated with lithography technique. The 3D simulation was performed based on COMSOL software using level set method. The size of droplet is inversely proportional to the flow rate of continuous phase according to exponential function, linearly proportional with the flow rate of dispersed phase, and the width of lateral channel decrease.

The first reported CMOS-MEMS processes produce microstructural sidewalls by stacking the drain/source con- tact cut and metal via cuts in the CMOS and removing the metallization layers above the cuts [13]. The substrate is exposed in the cut regions. A wet or dry isotropic silicon etch undercuts and releases the microstructures. Gaps between microstructures are limited to several microns because of artifacts in the etch pits from etching metal above the CMOS contacts.
