The core of the Special Economic Zone is an effort to increase investment by developing certain regions/zones to spur economic growth. Through examples from the Middle East and South Asia I explain how the objectives of excellence in business performance and quality management have been attained without substantive investment by following the basic principles and concepts of Supply Chain Management and Quality Management. The effort to realize Special Economic Zones as an effort to increase investment in Indonesia is a choice now.

Patients with pathogenic sequence variants (PSVs) in BRCA1/BRCA2 are at high risk of developing ovarian cancer (OC). However, genetic testing for BRCA1/BRCA2 PSVs is still not a routine practice in the Middle East. With the lack of epidemiological studies in the region, we aim to describe the prevalence of BRCA1/BRCA2 PSVs in patients with OC across diferent countries in the Gulf region.

Medicago ciliaris (L.) Krock and Medicago intertexta (L.) Mill are most often found in saline regions and are considered as potential resources for genes related to salinity resistance. To explore the genetic diversity of these two species by mean of nrSSR (simplesequence repeats) markers, 11 accessions originated from different regions in north of Africa and Middle East were chosen. Ten among 14 markers turned out to be polymorphic and gave 72 alleles. Eight markers were very informative with PIC values > 0.5, and three of them were found to be nonneutral.

This paper presents a study which analyzes the energy security in Jordan in light of several regional conflicts for the period (1960-2011). We apply an event study method to assess the direct and indirect effects of six regional conflicts on the energy sector in Jordan based on a proposed energy security framework developed from an infusion of frameworks found in literature. The conflicts include the 6 days war, Lebanese civil war, Iraq-Iran war, First Gulf war, Iraq Invasion, and Egyptian revolution.

Whilst wild birds may have played a role in the spread of H5N1, they are far from being the main culprits. Following the discovery of H5N1-infected migrating wild birds in Qinghai Lake, China in 2005, migrating wild birds were assumed to be the key responsible agents for carrying the virus across to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. However, the geographic spread of the disease correlates with major road and rail routes rather than migratory routes or seasons (The Lancet Infectious Diseases 2006).

In recent history, H5N1 first appeared in 1997 in Hong Kong’s wet markets (live bird markets) and chicken farms. Its spread was contained in Hong Kong at that point following the culling of all poultry in the region. In 2003 the same virus resurfaced - suggesting it had never been eradicated - and spread relentlessly across East Asia, decimating the poultry population. In 2005, an outbreak in migratory wild birds in Qinghai Lake, China killed 6000 birds (Normile 2006b).
