  • This paper reports Participatory Land Use Planning (PLUP) methodology developed by integration of farmer’s preference through PRA, bio-physical evaluation of soils by land evaluation and socio-economic resources and tested in Eastern Maharashtra plateau of Central India. The study revealed that land use planning is dependent not only on the soil suitability criteria but also on the market forces, economic situation of the farmer, short term family needs, level of perception, social status, proximity and fragmentation of land and migration (labour).

  • Every year, a large chunk of workforce from Nuapada district are compelled for distress migration to work in the brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In order to find out the important factors causing distress migration among bonded labourers in Nuapada district of Odisha, the present study was carried out with a sample size of 50 respondents selected randomly from one migratory destination i.e. suburbs of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. The primary data was collected with the help of pre-structured interview schedule.

  • This article was aimed at studying the factor influence to close-knit family happiness of the northeastern rural households that have overseas migrating laborers using the quantitative research method and the household level as the analytical unit. Data collection was conducted in July, 2017 by means of interview with 334 households having overseas migrating members in Chaiyaphum, the province that has the second highest number of overseas migrating laborers. The analysis of data was based on descriptive statistics and Multiple Regression technique.

  • This paper analyses the root causes of rural outmigration, focusing on its economic and social implications. It takes as its starting point the fact that mobility is inherent in human existence. Livelihoods and sociocultural changes are intimately connected with population movements. To understand present and fast-developing trends in human mobility, we examine the origins of migratory movements and discern how such transformations actually affect the natural resource base, as well as how they shape livelihoods and socio-economic/cultural coexistence.

Factors such as rapid population growth, inequitable access to productive assets, especially land, the neglect of agriculture outside high potential areas, and the impact of external shocks, combine in certain areas to produce and reproduce poverty. Limited alternative non-farm income opportunities reinforce this situation. Poor households tend to respond either by migrating or by other options such as an expansion of farming activity to open new lands to cultivation, which may increase the pressure on natural resources.
