Milk from Tamil Nadu

Brucellosis is a contagious and reproductive disease of animals mainly caused by Brucella abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis and B. canis. Diagnosis and identification of associated risk factors in brucellosis is important in devising an effective control strategy. This study is mainly focused to find out the prevalence and assessment of risk factors in lactating cows for bovine brucellosis from eleven districts of Tamil Nadu.

Thirattupal is a traditional milk sweet of Tamil Nadu. Its physico-chemical, sensory, microbial and textural quality attributes have been studied and characterized. Samples were collected from three cities viz. Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai which are known for Thirattupal preparation and home for well-known Thirattupal manufacturers, and the quality attributes were recorded and documented.

Milk fever is the common disease and one among the important metabolic disorder in lactating dairy animals. It is an afebrile hypocalcaemic disease of cattle usually associated with immediately after parturition and initiation of lactation. Milk fever is a metabolic disease occurring in dairy animals during parturient period and management is economically most important, as it results in not only reduction in milk production but also loss of animals.

Milk fever is occurring in dairy animals during parturient period and management is economically most important, as it results in not only reduction in milk production but also loss of animals In the present study, logistic regression model was employed to estimate the probability of a particular dairy animal affected with milk fever or not. Namakkal and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu were purposively selected for the present study, a total of 83 (64 cow and 19 buffalo) milk fever affected dairy animals were selected through purposive sampling technique from these districts.

An unrecognized breed of Molai goat is seen in some taluk of Erode district and certain parts of Namakkal and Salem Districts. A total of 20 milk samples were collected from different places of home tract of Molai goat breed. Composition and nutritive value of milk collected from Molai goat breed doe was studied.

Sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a significant production digestive disorder of dairy cattle. This study conducted a point prevalence study of rumen health status in well-organized dairy herds in pollachi district of Tamil nadu. The study assessed rumen fluid, animal health status, milk production data and biological parameters. A total of sixty cows in early to mid-lactation were sampled from three farms. 8.33 percent of dairy cows managed under semi-intensive system were tested positive for SARA.
