Nowadays, the demand for high-quality multimedia services (video, audio, image, and data) is rapidly increasing. The Digital Video Broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T) standard, its second-generation version (DVB-T2), and the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard are the most promising systems to fulfill the demand for advanced multimedia services (e.g., high-definition image and video quality), especially in Europe. However, LTE mobile services can operate in a part of the UHF band allocated to DVB-T/T2 TV services previously.

This paper is a survey of the transmission techniques used in digital television (TV) standards worldwide. With the increase in the demand for High-Definition (HD) TV, videoon-demand and mobile TV services, there was a real need for more bandwidth-efficient, flawless and crisp video quality, which motivated the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting. In this paper we present a brief history of the development of TV and then we survey the transmission technology used in different digital terrestrial, satellite, cable and mobile TV standards in different parts of the world.

The paper also provides a feature comparison with the multi-antenna techniques for 3GGP´s LTE/LTE-Advanced for cellular networks. Finally, physical layer simulation results calibrated within the DVB-NGH standardization process are provided to illustrate the gain of MIMO for the next generation of mobile TV broadcasting.

Reports of the death of TV have been greatly exaggerated. Contrary to predictions that the digital age would drag people away from TV, we are watching more TV than ever. Rather than being eroded, people’s viewing experience is being enriched by social networks and dedicated social TV apps like Zeebox. Increasingly, the assumption that a laptop, and a tablet or mobile are the 'second' and 'third' screens will dissipate. It will not be enough to simply broadcast a hashtag and flag a few tweets on the television screen.

Australia has two public service broadcasters: the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS). ABC is modeled after the BBC and aims to provide traditional public service content on TV and radio; SBS aims to provide a more specialized service of multicultural and multilingual programming (Hitchens 2006: 24). ABC (all channels included) has an audience share of 14 percent; SBS reaches 5 percent of the total audience (OzTAM 2010). Due to ABC’s status as the major public broadcaster, we focus primarily below on its funding and oversight.

Since the 1990s, digital signals have been increasingly used not only in various industries and engineering equipments but also in everybody’s daily necessities. Mobile phones, TV receivers, music CDs, multimedia computing, etc, are the indispensable items in modern life, in which digital formats are taken as a basic form for carrying and storing information. The major reason for the advancement in the use of digital signals is the big leap forward in the popularization of microelectronics and computing technology in the past three decades.

The Radio Spectrum and RF Environment Radio is the penultimate medium for mobile communications, but it has also been used for many fixed-site applications such as AM/FM broadcast, satellite trunking, point-to-point microwave telephony, and digital TV. Although there are radio applications in very low frequencies (VLF) and extremely low frequencies (ELF), these bands require extensive fixed-site infrastructure whose size and cost is dominated by the mile-long antennas and megawatt-power handling requirements. SDR insertion opportunities in these bands are limited. ...
