In this current study, the structural failure determination is carried out through a damage index based solely on the unhealthy state. A combination of the gapped smooth and modal curvature methods is the core of calculating the proposed indicator.

This article presents an improved procedure for detecting single damage in beam-like structures. Many damage detection methods are based on the analysis of beam natural frequency shifts in damaged and intact states and its analytical modal curvatures.

The aim of the research was the processing of the vibration signatures from healthy and damaged composite beams acquired with the help of a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV) upon excitation and analysis of the mode shapes acquired for damage detection. The displacement mode shapes acquired were then converted into curvature mode shapes with the help of a Central Difference Approximation method (CDA).
