The main objective of this paper is to categorize the available literature (analytical/experimental). The discussion remains descriptive, and the reader is recommended to consult the cited references for specifics on parameters and mathematical models. Three phases were adopted to conduct this literature review: (a) conducting the review, (b) conducting the analysis, and (c) writing up the review.

This study focuses on experimental testing and subsequent numerical analysis of impacted and pre-loaded composite coupons and bonded composite scarf joints under varying impact conditions. A methodology will be developed for the numerical modelling of preloaded impact tests to enable capture of critical failure modes and ultimate failure. The main aim is to validate a modelling strategy that will provide accurate failure characterisation of the tested joints using numerical analysis.

The aim of this Master of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis is to study the structural response and failure of aerospace grade composites during exposure to fire. Key aspects of the research are to analyse the thermal and mechanical responses of laminates and sandwich composites in high temperature and fire environments, which result in softening and structural failure. The research is concentrated on carbon/epoxy laminates and sandwich composites, which are the most common composite materials used in aerospace structures.

With the amount of genetic information available, a lot of attention has focused on systems biology, in particular biomolecular interactions. Con-sidering the huge number of such interactions, and their often weak and transient nature, conventional experimental methods such as X-ray crystal-lography and NMR spectroscopy are not sufficient to gain structural insight into these. A wealth of biochemical and⁄or biophysical data can, however, readily be obtained for biomolecular complexes.

We have investigated the molecular mechanisms that produce different structural and functional behavior in the monomeric and trimeric forms of seminal vesicle protein no. 4, a protein with immunomodulatory, anti-inflamma-tory, and procoagulant activity secreted from the rat seminal vesicle epithelium. The monomeric and trimeric forms were characterized in solution by CD.

The newly emerging field of systems biology involves a judicious interplay between high-throughput ‘wet’ experimentation, computational modelling and technology development, coupled to the world of ideas and theory. This interplay involves iterative cycles, such that systems biology is not at all confined to hypothesis-dependent studies, with intelligent, principled, hypothesis-generating studies being of high importance and consequently very far from aimless fishing expeditions.
