Modifed chitosan

Investigation of Zn(II) adsorption by the chitosan grafted with citric acid via crosslinking with glutraldehyde (C-Gch) was conduced by bath method. Effect of parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and other metal cations was determined.

Chitosan-sheath and -chitin-core nanowhiskers (CsNWs) have been successfully generated by surface deacetylation of chitin nanowhiskers (CtNWs) in the never-dried state. Acid hydrolysis (3N HCl, 30 mL/g, 104 ◦C) of pure chitin derived from crab shell yielded 65% 4–10 nm thick, 16 nm wide and 214 nm long chitin whiskers (CtNWs) that were 86% crystalline and 81% acetylated.

Multifunctional and biofunctional coatings for medical devices are an attractive strategy towards tailoring the interactions of the device with the body, thereby influencing the host response, and the susceptibility to microbial colonization. Here we describe the development of a coating process to yield amphiphilic, lubricious coatings, resistant to bacterial colonization, based on chitosan.

In the present work, hybrid microgels based on chitosan and SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized. Both chitosan and the SiO2 NPs were submitted to chemical modification reactions to having vinyl groups incorporated into their structures.

A low cost column mode device was designed and fabricated for removal of trivalent and pentavalent arsenic from water. The chemically modified chitosan was entrapped in polyurethane matrix and used as a column bed for adsorption for both the forms of arsenic. The chemical modification of chitosan was achieved by pre-treatment with ferrous oxide manganese oxide. The column bed exhibited 75% of As(III) and 72 % of As(V) removal at 1000 ppb concentration.
