An experiment was conducted to study the effect of elevated levels of CO2 by exposing the artificially infested cigarette beetle in cured turmeric rhizomes to eight different concentrations of CO2 viz., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 per cent with three replications of each treatment and the efficacy of treatments was tested based on cured turmeric rhizomes infestation and population buildup of L. serricorne.

The effect of time and temperature on the respiration rate (RR) of fresh-cut produce is critical towards the development of a suitable modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system. This requires an adequate mathematical model for prediction of RR as a function of both time and temperature. This study investigated the effect of temperature (5, 10 and 15 °C) and storage time of 1 to 5 days on the RR (RO2 and RCO2) of two pomegranate cultivars (cv. „Bhagwa‟ and„Ganesh‟) fresh arils. RO2 and RCO2 were within the range of 2.54 to 8.36 ml/kg.h and 2.76 to 10.04 ml/kg.

The study of sensory parameters for stored samples of Bengal gram, gram dhal and gram flour in different were observed at every interval of 30 days. Samples were kept in laminated LDPE bags under different packaging conditions i.e. vacuum packaging, modified atmosphere packaging and ambient conditions for 120 days. The effect of packaging on the sensory parameters of stored samples viz., colour, appearance, flavor, texture, taste and overall acceptability were found by 9 point Hedonic Scale.

The effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with chemical treatment on physicochemical quality fresh-cut pears was investigated. Cut-pears were subjected to the following conditions: (1) MAP + Treated - (1% citric acid + 1% CaCl2) and stored in MAP at 8 ºC, (2) Treated - (1% citric acid + 1% CaCl2) and stored at room temperature and regular atmosphere, (3) MAP + Untreated - No chemical treatment and stored in MAP at 8 ºC, (4) Untreated - No chemical treatment and stored at room temperature and regular atmosphere.

The experiment was carried out to understand the storability of onion seeds by subjecting to different modified atmospheric storage conditions with different combination of gases like carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen at different concentrations. The experiment was consisted of seed storage of onion (Arka Kalyan) under modified atmospheric storage conditions. There were 15 treatments and the experiment was carried out in Completely Randomized Block Design in four replications. Observations on various seed germination parameters were recorded bimonthly.

The cured tubers of variety Kufri Chipsona-4 were subjected to the sprout inhibiting treatment viz., hot water dip treatment (57.5±0.1 oC for 20 min) along with control and were packed in nylon mesh bags, MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) and vacuum packaging. The tubers were stored for 5 weeks at room temperature conditions (32±2oC; RH ~90%)and sampled at 7- day interval. A progressive increase in decay loss and shriveling of potato tubers was observed during storage. Hot water dip treated tubers showed significantly lower decay loss and shriveling than untreated tubers.

An experiment retail plastic packaging system was used to compare the atmospheric composition within sealed packs containing tomato fruits. A range of plastic films with different permeability properties were tested to study the effects of these conditions on the changes in postharvest qualities of tomatoes harvested at the pink stage of maturity and stored at 13oC for 60 days.

Human activities are affecting the global environment in myriad ways, with numerous direct and indirect effects on ecosystems. The climate and atmospheric composition of Earth are changing rapidly. Humans have directly modified half of the ice-free terrestrial surface and use 40% of terrestrial production. Our actions are causing the sixth major extinction event in the history of life on Earth and are radically modifying the interactions among forests, fields, streams, and oceans.

The next chapter describes how a conventional model of ocean-atmosphere interaction can be modified to include the free convection within the air and the swell of the ocean. These effects become particularly important for low wind velocities, where the standard Charnock wind stress formula leads to a singularity. The article should be of particular interest to readers who are familiar with standard turbulence modeling, and it is important to weather modeling.
