  • In this study, a simple size-dependent isogeometric approach for bending analysis of functionally graded (FG) microplates using the modified strain gradient theory (MSGT), simple first-order shear deformation theory (sFSDT) and isogeometric analysis is presented for the first time. The present approach reduces one variable when comparing with the original first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) within five variables and only considers three material length scale parameters (MLSPs) to capture size effects.

  • In this paper, we focus specially on the effective elastic moduli of the heterogeneous composites with arbitrary inclusion shapes. The main idea of this paper is to replace those inhomogeneities by simple equivalent circular (spherical) isotropic inclusions with modified elastic moduli. Available simple approximations for the equivalent circular (spherical) inclusion media then can be used to estimate the effective properties of the original medium.

  • This paper presents free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) porous nanoplates based on isogeometric approach. Based on a modified power-law function, material properties are given. The nonlocal elasticity is used to capture size effects. According to a combination of the Hamilton’s principle and the higher order shear deformation theory, the governing equations of the porous nanoplates are derived.

  • The effectiveness of powdered emulsions (powdered cement modifiers) and aqueous polymer dispersions (aqueous cement modifiers) on improvements in strength and elastic properties of mortars is investigated in this paper. Polymer-modified mortars using various powdered and aqueous cement modifiers were prepared with variation in polymer-cement ratio, and tested for flexural strength, compressive strength, tensile strength, deflection, extreme tensile fiber strain and tensile strain.

  • In this study, two types of acrylic latexes, PA (polyacrylate) and PU/PA (polyurethane modified PA), are investigated in their influences on mechanical properties of mortar under different interaction mechanisms. In light of a previous study, the polymer–cement hydrates interaction mechanisms in PA and PU/PA modified mortars are illustrated respectively, and the microstructures are simulated using a computer model.

  • A novel approach to predict the effective elastic moduli of matrix composites made from non-circular inclusions embedded in a continuous matrix is proposed. In this approach, those inhomogeneities are substituted by simple equivalent circularinclusions with modified elastic properties obtained from comparing the dilute solution results.
