  • A search for a balance between complexity and comprehensibility of the solution led us to the field of multiagent systems. Beliefs-Desires-Intentions (BDI) systems offer useful abstractions for activities of a single selfdriving car and collective intelligence of such vehicles. Indeed, the BDI framework helps to combine two distinct natures of a selfdriving car: its reactiveness and proactiveness. Moreover, the modularity of the resulting architectures for an individual CAV and urban traffic induced by these cars makes the design intelligible and flexible.

  • Concept recognition is an essential task in biomedical information extraction, presenting several complex and unsolved challenges. The development of such solutions is typically performed in an ad-hoc manner or using general information extraction frameworks, which are not optimized for the biomedical domain and normally require the integration of complex external libraries and/or the development of custom tools.

  • A component is a modular (cohesive), deployable (portable), replaceable (plug-and-play), and reusable set of well-defined functionalities that encapsulates its implementation and exports it as a higher-level interface. Why use components? Reusability, productivity, composability, adaptability, scalability, reliability, and many other features make component-oriented design and development very useful especially in enterprise frameworks.

  • This paper introduces a framework for modeling and verifying safety properties of component-based systems (CBS) by extracting their models from designs in the form of UML 2.0 sequence diagrams. Given UML 2.0 sequence diagrams of a CBS, the framework extracts regular expressions exactly describing behaviors of the system.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for generating quantifier scopings. The algorithm is designed to generate only logically non-redundant scopings and to partially order the scopings with a given :default scoping first. Removing logical redundancy is not only interesting per se, but also drastically reduces the processing time. The input and output formats are described through a few access and construction functions. Thus, the algorithm is interesting for a modular linguistic theory, which is flexible with respect to syntactic and semantic framework. ...

  • We present a unified view of many translation algorithms that synthesizes work on deductive parsing, semiring parsing, and efficient approximate search algorithms. This gives rise to clean analyses and compact descriptions that can serve as the basis for modular implementations. We illustrate this with several examples, showing how to build search spaces for several disparate phrase-based search strategies, integrate non-local features, and devise novel models.

  • Java EE developers increasingly want to utilize OSGi to develop modular applications for component and service-based architectures. But tools required for OSGi implementation have been slow to develop. Spring Dynamic Modules (Spring DM) is a framework that simplifies the creation of component and service-oriented architectures with OSGi, to build modular Java applications using the powerful Spring framework.

  • Taken abstractly, the two-level (Kimmo) morphological framework allows computationally difficult problems to arise. For example, N + 1 small a u t o m a t a are sufficient to encode the Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) for formulas in N variables. However, the suspicion arises that natural-language problems may have a special structure - not shared with SAT - - that is not directly captured in the two-level model. In particular, the natural problems may generally have a modular and local nature that distinguishes them from more "global" SAT problems.

  • The paper describes work on applying a general purpose natural language processing system to transfer-based interactive translation. Transfer takes place at the level of Quasi Logical Form (QLF), a contextually sensitive logical form representation which is deep enough for dealing with cross-linguistic differences. Theoretical arguments and experimental results are presented to support the claim that this framework has good properties in terms of modularity, compositionality, reversibility and monotonicity. ...

  • We describe a new framework for dependency grammar, with a modular decomposition of immediate dependency and linear precedence. Our approach distinguishes two orthogonal yet mutually constraining structures: a syntactic dependency tree and a topological dependency tree. The syntax tree is nonprojective and even non-ordered, while the topological tree is projective and partially ordered.

  • Traditional concatenative speech synthesis systems use a number of heuristics to define the target and concatenation costs, essential for the design of the unit selection component. In contrast to these approaches, we introduce a general statistical modeling framework for unit selection inspired by automatic speech recognition. Given appropriate data, techniques based on that framework can result in a more accurate unit selection, thereby improving the general quality of a speech synthesizer. They can also lead to a more modular and a substantially more efficient system. ...

  • This paper presents a general-purpose open source package for recognizing Textual Entailment. The system implements a collection of algorithms, providing a configurable framework to quickly set up a working environment to experiment with the RTE task. Fast prototyping of new solutions is also allowed by the possibility to extend its modular architecture. We present the tool as a useful resource to approach the Textual Entailment problem, as an instrument for didactic purposes, and as an opportunity to create a collaborative environment to promote research in the field. ...

  • This book has two main goals: to provide a unifed and structured overview of this growing field, as well as to propose a corresponding software framework, the OpenTL library, developed by the author and his working group at TUM-Informatik. The main objective of this work is to show, how most real-world application scenarios can be naturally cast into a common description vocabulary, and therefore implemented and tested in a fully modular and scalable way, through the defnition of a layered, object-oriented software architecture.
