In this study, numerous Grateloupia spp. collected from coastal Vietnam and voucher specimens were used for morphological observation and phylogenetic analyses. Both analyses for samples collected at Nha Trang reveal a new record of G. yangjiangensis. The phylogenetic trees indicated that the herbarium vouchers labeled ‘G filicina’ and ‘G. livida’ from other locations of Vietnam group to G. yinggehaiensis clade. In addition, the phylogenetic trees also showed that the unknown Grateloupia sp. recently collected from Cat Ba Island is Phyllymenia taiwanensis. Therefore, a new record, G.

Ebook "Molecular techniques in food biology: Safety, biotechnology, authenticity and traceability" explores all aspects of microbe-food interactions, especially as they pertain to food safety. Traditional morphological, physiological, and biochemical techniques for the detection, differentiation, and identification of microorganisms have severe limitations. As an alternative, many of those responsible for monitoring food safety are turning to molecular tools for identifying foodborne microorganisms.

Wild mushrooms are extensively gathered by rural communities throughout the uplands of northern Vietnam and nearby countries for food and medicine. These non-wood forest products are important for the livelihood of numerous rural communities. This study was undertaken to establish the identity of the edible Russula mushroom being collected for food in Cao Bang, Bac Giang and Quang Ninh provinces.

The use of DNA barcodes is a molecular method commonly used for the identification of specimens that are difficult to pinpoint accurately by traditional morphological methods. DNA barcoding uses standard short genomic regions that are universally present in target lineages and has sufficient sequence variation to identify species in the genus.

The intraspecific divergences are slightly different between species, from 3% to 5%. The AGBD analysis and phylogenetic trees also support 14 morphological species. It is also suggested to have more COI sequences of more species for better barcode reference library and better molecular species identification.

The genus Sphagnum is one of the richest taxa among the Turkish bryophytes. Up to now, it has been represented by 27 taxa in six sections (Sphagnum, Acutifolia, Squarrosa, Subsecunda, Cuspidata, and Rigida). In this study, an identification key for the section Sphagnum was prepared, and the section was investigated using phylogenetic analyses, with a main focus on Turkish bryophytes. This study provides the first sequence data of the trnL intron region for five species of the section Sphagnum from Turkey (namely S. centrale, S. divinum, S. medium, S. palustre, and S.

A new microsporidian pathogen isolated from Crepidodera aurata was identified based on morphological and ultrastructural characteristics, coupled with a molecular phylogenetic analysis. The spores of the microsporidian pathogen were slightly curved in shape, and measured 2.44–3.55 µm in length and 1.25–1.55 µm in width (n = 50). Its ultrastructure is characteristic of monokaryotic groups. All lifecycle stages of the pathogen, including meronts, sporonts, sporoblasts, and mature spores, are monokaryotic. The spore has 6–8 windings of the polar filament.

Previous studies on the distribution of the Ahaetulla snake across Indonesia only focused on morphological characters without any molecular data. This study was aimed at analyzing phylogenetic relationships among the genus Ahaetulla in Indonesia based on partial mitochondrial DNA sequences of 16 specimens collected from the Sundaland and Lesser Sunda regions. The 12S-rDNA gene was PCR-amplified and sequenced to analyze phylogenetic relationships and to estimate the divergence time between the 2 Ahaetulla populations of the Sundaland and Lesser Sunda regions.

Eriophyoid mites are recognized as the second most economically important group among the Acari following spider mites. The identification of eriopyhoid mites traditionally based on morphological characters. However, the size of these diagnostic structures is very small and this often causes misidentification of species. In this study, we used DNA-based identification for five eriophyoid species collected from the Thrace region of Turkey (Aceria erinea, Rhyncaphytoptus ficifoliae, Eriophyes pyri, Aceria massalongoi, Colomerus vitis collected from Juglans regia L., Ficus carica L.

Saxifraga artvinensis V.A.Matthews, which is endemic to Turkey, was discovered on Tiryal Mountain (A8 Artvin, northeastern Turkey). Approximately 175 km from its type locality, a new population of the species was discovered, in the Picea orientalis forest in the Altındere Valley National Park, in A7 Trabzon (northeastern Turkey). A comparison with the known population of S. artvinensis confirmed that this new population represented a new taxon and is described as S. artvinensis subsp. meryemii Terzioğlu & Coşkunç.

Teucrium L. is a well-known and cosmopolitan genus of the Lamiaceae family. In Turkey, the genus is represented by 36 species (48 taxa). Teucrium Sect. Teucrium that this study focuses on comprises around 30 species worldwide and is mainly distributed in countries of the Mediterranean Basin. With 11 species (14 taxa), it is the second-largest section of the genus Teucrium in Turkey. In this study, morphological and molecular findings were evaluated and the phylogeny and biogeographical distribution of Sect. Teucrium were analyzed. Also, five endemic taxa belonging to Sect.

Anuran metamorphosis, which is obligatorily initiated and sustained by thyroid hormone (TH), is a dramatic example of extensive morphological, biochemical and cellular changes occurring during post-embryonic development. Thus, it provides an ideal model to understand the actions of the hormone and molecular mechanisms underlying these developmental and apoptotic processes. In addition to transcriptional factors, microRNAs (miRNAs) play key roles in diverse biological processes via post-transcriptional repression of mRNAs.

The Southeast Asian Shrews (Crocidura dracula & C. fuliginosa) are so similar in external morphology and skull characters. Thus, their taxonomic status and distribution have debated for a long time. Recent researches provided the molecular identification which caused the change of outlook on occurrence area of these two species.

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is one of the oldest domesticated crops and has been considered as an ideal model plant for C4 grasses. It has abundant type of anther and hull colors which is not only a most intuitive morphological marker for color selection in seed production, but also has very important biological significance for the study of molecular mechanism of regulating the synthesis and metabolism of flavonoids and lignin.
