Balancing the yield, quality and resistance to disease is a daunting challenge in crop breeding due to the negative relationship among these traits. Large-scale genomic landscape analysis of germplasm resources is considered to be an efficient approach to dissect the genetic basis of the complex traits.

In maize hybrid breeding, complementary pools of parental lines with reshuffled genetic variants are established for superior hybrid performance. To comprehensively decipher the genetics of heterosis, we present a new design of multiple linked F1 populations with 42,840 F1 maize hybrids, generated by crossing a synthetic population of 1428 maternal lines with 30 elite testers from diverse genetic backgrounds and phenotyped for agronomic traits.

Mosquitoes are one of the organisms subjected to frequent insecticide application due to their status as vectors that carry a wide range of life-threatening diseases. Turkey has climatic and other ecological features required for the breeding and living of 50 species from 8 genera. The members of the Culex pipiens complex are the dominant mosquitoes among them. In order to design more sustainable insecticide resistance management strategies, it is important to investigate the genetic structure of mosquito populations using molecular techniques.

Advances in genomics technologies are making it increasingly feasible to characterize breeding lines that carry traits of agronomic interest. Tobacco germplasm lines that carry loci designated VAM and va have been extensively investigated due to their association with potyvirus resistance (both VAM and va) and defects in leaf surface compounds originating from glandular trichomes (VAM only). Molecular studies and classical genetic analyses are consistent with the model that VAM and va represent deletion mutations in the same chromosomal region.

Common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) is a forage grain legume of high protein content and high nitrogen fixation, relevant in sustainable agriculture systems. Drought is the main limiting factor of this crop yield. Genetic resources collections are essential to provide genetic variability for breeding.

The desi cotton hybrids viz., G.Cot.DH-7 (Sujay x G 27) and G.Cot.DH-9 (4011 x 824) and their parents were characterized using morphological and molecular markers. The desi cotton hybrids and their parents showed variations for morphological characters viz., foliage, leaf shape, leaf hairiness, growth habit, pollen colour, bolls shape and stem hairiness. Based on the distinct morphological characters one can identify true hybrid. A set of 25 RAPD and 19 ISSR were used for molecular characterization of desi hybrids.

Diversification of parental base in any hybrid breeding programme is an important step to sustain the crop. Fifty seven uniform and stable gene pool materials and exotic collection of economic importance of sunflower were crossed with six cytoplasmic male sterile lines of PET-1 background in a Line x Tester fashion to study their maintainer or restorer reaction in a randomized block design in two replications. The inbredGP6-990 acted as restores for all six CMS lines.

Based on marker-assisted selection, 190 F1 hybrids were designated as seedless grapevine candidates since they carried a minimum of 1 seedlessness-related allele, and the 124 F1 hybrids were removed from the seedless grapevine breeding studies.
