Moss flora

Ditrichum pusillum (Hedw.) Hampe has been collected for the first time from the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. A description of the species is given, along with notes on the ecology and a discussion of the phytogeographic significance. This note will provide better knowledge of the moss flora of Turkey.

In this study carried out in the Sündiken Mountains, 83 taxa were identified by the authors. These belong to 21 families and 42 genera of bryophytes. Of these, 64 taxa are new for the B7 grid-square adopted by Henderson.

The moss specimens collected from Degirmenbogazi and its environment, which were chosen as the research area, were evaluated. A total of 74 taxa belonging to 45 genera and 19 families were identified. Of these, 16 taxa are new records for the B6 grid square in the system adopted by Henderson.

Two new varieties, Ctenidium molluscum (Hedw.) Mitt. var. condensatum (Schimp.) Britt. and Ctenidium molluscum (Hedw.) Mitt. var. robustum Boul. collected from the western Black Sea region were determined to be new records for the moss flora of Turkey.

A list of mosses from the Ilgaz Mountain National Park which is an important area because of its location and floristic richness, is presented. A total of 109 taxa belonging to 56 genera and 21 families were found from 650 moss specimens collected between 1997 and 2000.

Grimmia anomala Schimp., Pohlia filum (Schimp.) Mårtensson, and Hookeria acutifolia Hook. & Grev. are noteworthy moss species reported here for the first time in South-West Asia from specimens collected in north-eastern and north-western Turkey. The diagnostic characters, habitat preferences, illustrations and updated ranges of the treated species are given together with notes comparing them with those of related taxa.

Sixty mosses belonging to 12 families and 31 genera are presented from Al-Ghab plain in north-west Syria. Among these, 29 species are recorded for the first time for the bryophyte flora of Syria.

The moss flora of Artvin Province (Ardanuç, Şavşat, Borçka, Murgul, and Arhavi districts) in Turkey was studied between 2009 and 2011. A total of 167 moss taxa (belonging to 80 genera and 33 families) were recorded within the study area. Among these, 3 species [Dicranella schreberiana (Hedw.) Dixon, Dicranodontium asperulum (Mitt.) Broth.

In this study, the bryophyte flora of Melendiz Mountain (Niğde Province) was investigated. In total, 99 taxa were found in this area. Of these, 4 taxa were liverworts and 95 taxa were mosses. According to Henderson’s grid-square system, 39 moss taxa for the B8 square and 12 moss taxa for the C13 square are new records.

Three unforgettable mentors shoved me off into a vocation of natural history. Dr. Neil Douglas, Dr. R. Dale Thomas, and the late Dr. Tom Kee, biology professors at what was then known as Northeast Louisiana University, first had to teach me how much I didn’t know before they could inject me with an education proper. Their pedagogy emphasized taxonomy, be it of freshwater darters, adder’s tongue ferns, or flycatchers, and the “survival of the fittest” theory applied as well to their students.
