Hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) has recently emerged as an attractive technique for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It well balances the deman d for sufficient beamforming gains to overcome the propagatio n loss and the desire to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. In this paper, the mean square error (MSE) is chosen as the performance metric to characterize the transmission reliability. Using the minimum sum-MSE criterion, we investigate the HBF design for broadband mmWave transmissions.

The analysis of the spectral properties and dynamic evolution of a CME/shock event observed on November 1st 2003 in white-light by the LASCO coronagraph and in the ultraviolet by the UVCS instrument operating aboard SOHO, has been performed to compute the properties of some important plasma parameters in the middle corona below about 2Rx. Simultaneous observations obtained with the MLSO/Mk4 white-light coronagraph, providing both the early evolution of the CME expansion in the corona and the pre-shock electron density profile along the CME front, were also used to study this event.

Update summarization is a new challenge in multi-document summarization focusing on summarizing a set of recent documents relatively to another set of earlier documents. We present an unsupervised probabilistic approach to model novelty in a document collection and apply it to the generation of update summaries. The new model, called D UAL S UM, results in the second or third position in terms of the ROUGE metrics when tuned for previous TAC competitions and tested on TAC-2011, being statistically indistinguishable from the winning system.

We address the rating-inference problem, wherein rather than simply decide whether a review is “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”, as in previous sentiment analysis work, one must determine an author’s evaluation with respect to a multi-point scale (e.g., one to five “stars”). This task represents an interesting twist on standard multi-class text categorization because there are several different degrees of similarity between class labels; for example, “three stars” is intuitively closer to “four stars” than to “one star”. This paper presents a novel metric-based framework for the task of automatic taxonomy induction. The framework incrementally clusters terms based on ontology metric, a score indicating semantic distance; and transforms the task into a multi-criteria optimization based on minimization of taxonomy structures and modeling of term abstractness. It combines the strengths of both lexico-syntactic patterns and clustering through incorporating heterogeneous features. To date, few attempts have been made to develop and validate methods for automatic evaluation of linguistic quality in text summarization. We present the first systematic assessment of several diverse classes of metrics designed to capture various aspects of well-written text. We train and test linguistic quality models on consecutive years of NIST evaluation data in order to show the generality of results. For grammaticality, the best results come from a set of syntactic features.

We introduce an approach to optimize a machine translation (MT) system on multiple metrics simultaneously. Different metrics (e.g. BLEU, TER) focus on different aspects of translation quality; our multi-objective approach leverages these diverse aspects to improve overall quality. Our approach is based on the theory of Pareto Optimality.
