Multitask learning (MTL) using electronic health records allows concurrent prediction of multiple endpoints. MTL has shown promise in improving model performance and training efficiency; however, it often suffers from negative transfer – impaired learning if tasks are not appropriately selected.

In this paper, we have surveyed some typical facial attribute learning methods. Five major categories of the state-of-the-art methods are identified: (1) Traditional learning, (2) Deep Single Task Learning, (3) Deep Multitask Learning, (4) Imbalanced Data Solver, and (5) Facial Attribute Ontology. They included from traditional learning algorithm to deep learning, along with methods that assist in solving semantic gaps based on ontology and solving data imbalances. For each algorithm of category, basic theories as well as their strengths, weaknesses, and differences are discussed.

Identifying molecular signatures of disease phenotypes is studied using two mainstream approaches: (i) Predictive modeling methods such as linear classification and regression algorithms are used to find signatures predictive of phenotypes from genomic data, which may not be robust due to limited sample size or highly correlated nature of genomic data.

Patent translation is a complex problem due to the highly specialized technical vocabulary and the peculiar textual structure of patent documents. In this paper we analyze patents along the orthogonal dimensions of topic and textual structure. We view different patent classes and different patent text sections such as title, abstract, and claims, as separate translation tasks, and investigate the influence of such tasks on machine translation performance.
