Although there have been studies on the association between nutritional status and functional limitations, there were few studies on Asian centenarians in community. Therefore, this study aims to identify associations between nutritional status and functional limitations among centenarians in China.

This study aimed to construct and validate a prediction model of acute ischemic stroke in geriatric patients with primary hypertension. Methods: This retrospective file review collected information on 1367 geriatric patients diagnosed with primary hypertension and with and without acute ischemic stroke between October 2018 and May 2020.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication following non-cardiac surgery with adverse short- and long- term morbidity and mortality. Evidence shows that hypoalbuminemia is associated with increased AKI risk in patients with infectious diseases and cancer and following cardiac surgery and transplant surgery.

An index of dynamic lactate change that incorporates both the magnitude of change and the time interval of such change, termed “normalized lactate load,” may reflect the hypoxic burden of septic shock. We aimed to evaluate the association between normalized lactate load and 28-day mortality in adult septic shock patients.

There is a lack of clinical-radiological predictive models for the small (≤20 mm) solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs). We aim to establish a clinical-radiological predictive model for differentiating malignant and benign small SPNs.

Genotype-phenotype association has been one of the long-standing problems in bioinformatics. Identifying both the marginal and epistatic effects among genetic markers, such as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), has been extensively integrated in Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) to help derive “causal” genetic risk factors and their interactions, which play critical roles in life and disease systems.

Computed tomography-guided transthoracic needle biopsy (CT-TNB) is a widely used method for diagnosis of lung diseases; however, CT-TNB-induced bleeding is usually unexpected and this complication can be life-threatening. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a predictive model for hemoptysis following CT-TNB.

Despite the progress seen in the last decade in diagnosis and treatment, lung cancer has still a bad prognosis and a substantial number of patients died within the weeks following diagnosis. The objective of this study was to quantify early mortality in lung cancer, to identify patients who are at high risk of early decease, and to describe their management in a real world.

HIV infection is a known risk factor for cancer but little is known about HIV testing patterns and the burden of HIV infection in cancer patients. We did a cross-sectional analysis to identify predictors of prior HIV testing and to quantify the burden of HIV in black cancer patients in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The aim of our study was to investigate the incidence of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) in patients operated for benign thyroid diseases (BTD) and its relation to age, sex, extent of surgery and type of BTD. Methods: Retrospective study of 2466 patients who underwent thyroid surgery for BTD from 2008 to 2013. To determine independent predictors for PTMC we used three separate multivariate logistic regression models (MLR).

Failure to grow (ill-thrift) in calves has a negative effect on animal production and health. The present study was carried out from November, 2009 to May, 2013 to investigate the risk factors of ill-thrift in buffalo calves. A total of 344 calves at 78 smallholder farms were selected randomly. A questionnaire was designed to include managemental, nutritional and disease risk factors. Serum selenium, copper, zinc, iron, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium were measured.

In the first edition of this book, I claimed that humanity could be divided into three groups: (1) those who conduct their own research studies, (2) those who do not formally engage in the research process but nonetheless encounter the results of others’ investigations, and (3) those who are neither “makers” nor “consumers” of research claims. Now, nearly 40 years since I made that statement, I still believe that every person on the face of the Earth can be classified into one of those three groups.
