Mushroom growers

The key role played by Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) of India in popularizing oyster mushroom cultivation technology among the rural youths through training and demonstration programmes has been widely appreciated. Evaluation of outcome and efficacy of the training and demonstration programmes conducted by KVKs are necessary to keep the method of transfer of technology in right track. The present study was undertaken to find out the impact of training and demonstration programme conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barpeta.

The study was undertaken with an objective to assess perceived constraints of mushroom grower in mushroom production enterprise. The study was purposively undertaken in flood prone Malda district of West Bengal due to gaining popularity of mushroom production enterprise among rural women and unemployed rural youth who were adopting this venture for employment generation. The rural youth were very much interested in mushroom production enterprise but now they have perceived various constraints in adoption of this enterprise for self-employment.

Three varieties of milky mushroom viz., APK2, Bheema and IIHR Ca-1 were assessed for its performance in Kanyakumari district as on farm testing in five milky mushroom growers farm. The days for spawn run ranged from 14to 19 days.

Oxalates in edible mushrooms are the new concept for mitigating the kidney stones in humans. In the present study, a total of nine edible mushroom species were collected, out of which six were procured from the local vendors, growers and three from wild areas of West Bengal. The sporocarps of the collected mushroom were sterilized with alcohol and cleaned to detect oxalate contents in edible mushroom species. The total oxalate content of the raw, commercially grown mushrooms ranged from 44.1 to 92.

Performance of milky mushroom (Calocybe indica) on different agricultural wastes like paddy straw, castor stalks, sunflower stalks, coconut coir pith, oil palm waste and groundnut shells was evaluated during the summer season. The spawning was done by sterilization of all the seven substrates. The bags were kept in spawn running room with the maintenance of temperature (30°C–35° C) and relative humidity (70–80 %) respectively.
