Mycotic keratitis

Scedosporium apiospermum, an opportunistic and flamentous fungus, is a rarely seen ocular entity that is difficult to identify and heal. We report a challenging case of S. apiospermium keratitis and discuss the treatment modalities in light of previous studies.

The research was done to isolate the common fungal agent involved in mycotic keratitis attending tertiary care hospital. The purpose of isolating the organisms is for the early diagnosis and treatment of the patients. The research lead to the finding that, Corneal trauma was the most common predisposing factor in the pathogenesis of mycotic keratitis, which was mostly seen in farmers i.e, agriculturists who are in the actively working age group.

Corneal blindness is responsible for 1.5 to 2 million new cases of monocular blindness every year in which ocular trauma and corneal ulceration are significant contributors. Corneal infections of fungal etiology are common in India (19-45%). Aspergillus (16– 53%) and Fusarium (10–45%) species are the common pathogens. Purpose: 1.To Identify and isolate the various fungi causing fungal keratitis. 2. To know the usefulness of Gram stain, KOH wet mount and fungal culture in identification of fungi. Materials and Methods: After taking written and informed consent taken.
