Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] is an important short duration grain legume which is grown in different parts of the country, for grain and green manure. It is an outstanding source of easily digestible proteins with low flatulence, which balances the staple rice diet in Asia. Mungbean yellow mosaic disease (MYMD) caused by whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) transmitted mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) is an important constraint of mungbean in India. Thirty five Indian mungbean genotypes were evaluated to identify the source of resistance against MYMV during kharif-2013.

Hybridization was carried out between highly resistant genotype Meha and four susceptible genotypes viz., Pusa Vishal, GJM-1006, GM-4 and GJM-1008 to deduce genetics of Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) resistance in mungbean. Parents, F1s, F2s and F3 progenies were evaluated for their response to MYMV infection utilizing highly susceptible variety GM-4 as an infector row keeping one row of GM-4 after every two rows of parents, F1s, F2s and F3 progenies.

In the present study, the screened genotypes were re-evaluated under screen-house conditions in order to confirm the sources of resistance against MYMV disease incidence. Out of them, 2 were categorized as resistant (R), 6 moderately resistant (MR), 12 moderately susceptible, 14 susceptible (S) and 1 as highly susceptible (HS). The resistant and highly susceptible genotypes could be used as parents for the development of mapping population in order to validate the molecular markers to facilitate marker-assisted selection for the development of MYMV resistant breeding lines.

Blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) (2n=22) is one of the most highly valuable pulse crop, cultivated in almost all parts of India. It is a good source of easily digestible proteins, carbohydrates and other nutritional factors. Besidesvarious biotic and abiotic constraints, viral diseases mostly yellow mosaic disease is the prime threat for extensive economic losses in areas of production.

Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) disease is one of the most devastating diseases of greengram causing 85 – 100 per cent yield loss and transmitted by the white fly, Bemisia tabaci. This has become increasingly serious because of the lack of resistance in the existing cultivars. Ten greengram genotypes were screened for MYMV disease resistance at hotspot of National Pulses Research Centre, Vamban during kharif season. Among them, SML 1815, MH 421 showed resistant reaction whereas, VBN (Gg) 3, VBN (Gg) 2, LGG 460, RMG 10-28 and TM 96-2 showed susceptible reaction.

In agricultural crops, interspecific hybridization is a useful tool to introduce novel variations for desirable traits across species and to ultimately widen the available genetic variation. Mungbean yellow mosaic virus disease (MYMV) is a major devastating disease in mungbean crop. Non availability of resistant source in cultivated mung bean, the closely related semi-domesticated species viz., Vigna stipulacea with MYMV resistant genes could be introgressed in cultivated mungbean (Vigna radiata).

French bean is one of the most important legume vegetables with highly antidiabetic property and used for cardiac problems. Mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) is one of the destructive viral diseases affecting yield potential of french bean both quantitatively and qualitatively. Induced mutations have offered a single and short alternative to conventional breeding including isolation, screening, selection and testing generation after generation. An investigation was carried out with Arka Anoop (French bean cultivar), treated with mutagen Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (EMS) at the dose of 0.

Generation mean analysis was employed in two crosses viz., MDU 1 x Mash 114 and MDU 1 x Mash 1008 of balckgram to partition the mean into various components viz., additive, dominance and epistasis. Traits viz., number of clusters per plant, pod length, and number of seeds per pod were controlled by additive gene action in the cross MDU 1 x Mash 114. The additive as well as additive x additive type of gene action were in control of seed yield per plant, MYMV disease scores and most of yield components in the cross MDU 1 x Mash 114.
