Mythology exists
-
Mythology exists in the cultural life of human societies across the world, with a role of explaining “why the world is as it is and things happens as they do”. Each writer uses the traditional myth-materials differently in their own unique creations. And we can call this the “remythologizing”.

The blending of fact and fancy which men call legend reached its fullest and richest expression in the golden age of Greece, and thus it is to Greek mythology that one must turn for the best form of any legend which foreshadows history. Yet the prevalence of legends regarding flight, existing in the records of practically every race, shows that this form of transit was a dream of many peoples--man always wanted to fly, and imagined means of flight. In this age of steel, a very great part of the inventive genius of man has gone into devices intended to facilitate transport, both of men and...

Though there is no period at which the ancients do not seem to have believed in a future life, continual confusion prevails when they come to picture the existence led by man in the other world, as we see from the sixth book of the _Æneid_. Combined with the elaborate mythology of Greece, we are confronted with the primitive belief of Italy, and doubtless of Greece too--a belief supported by all the religious rites in connection with the dead--that the spirits of the departed lived on in the tomb with the body.

Materials exist for separate observations on their oral tales, fictitious and historical; their hieroglyphics, music, and poetry; and the grammatical structure of the languages, their principles of combination, and the actual state of their vocabulary. The former topic has been selected as the commencement of the series.

and in treatises that the general public seldom sees and never reads. Among the topics touched upon are: The strange unfixedness of the ``fixed stars,’’ the vast migrations of the suns and worlds constituting the universe. The slow passing out of existence of those collocations of stars which for thousands of years have formed famous ``constellations,’’ preserving the memory of mythological heroes and heroines, and perhaps of otherwise unrecorded history.

Though there exists a body of feminist film making in Hindi cinema, the leading lady of Hindi films has more or less played defined roles which conform to the values upheld by Indian society. Women in Bollywood have been uni-dimensional characters, who are good or bad, white or black. There are no shades of grey. This dichotomy was reinforced in popular films which distinguished between the heroine and the vamp, the wife and the other woman. Films have also been inspired to a large extent from religion and mythology whereby women characters were seen as the epitome of virtue and...

The present work is designed to supply a want which still exists in our School Classical Literature. It has been represented to the editor, from several quarters, that his Larger Classical Dictionary, though well adapted for the use of the higher forms in the public schools, is excluded, both by its size and price, from a great number of schools, which are therefore obliged to put up with the abridgments of Lempriere's obsolete work. In consequence of these representations, the editor has been induced to draw up this Smaller Dictionary....
