A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2013 and Kharif 2014 on sandy loam soil to study the effect of vegetative barriers and improved forage species on growth and productivity of degraded grasslands under mid hill sub temperate conditions of Himachal Pradesh. Napier bajra hybrid (Pennisetum purpureum L. x P. Americanum L.) as vegetative barrier produced significantly taller plants as compared to setaria grass planted as vegetative barrier.

A lactation trial was conducted to study the effect of feeding sugarcane by products based complete ration on milk yield and milk quality as well, of murrah buffaloes. Seven rations (six complete rations were formulated by using sugarcane by-products and other crop residues and balanced concentrate mixture in the mash form and one conventional ration comprised with hybrid Napier and concentrate mixture) were prepared and fed 28 Murrah buffaloes distributed equally into seven groups in Randomized Block Design for a period of 180 days.

Study was planned to evaluate effect of high plan of nutrition on feed intake, growth, feed efficiency and cost of feeding in crossbred heifers (50% Holstein Friesian and 50% Kankrej inheritance). Twenty four crossbred heifers divided in two equal groups having similar body weight and age for twelve period of fifteen days. Heifers were fed concentrate, hybrid napier (Coimbture-3) and sorghum hay to meet nutrient requirement in control and 5-10% higher nutrients in treatment group.

The study was carried out at university Research Farm, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, under light textured soils. The treatments consisted of three irrigation levels viz., I1: drip irrigation at 100% Potential Evapo transpiration (PE), I2: drip irrigation at 75% PE and I3: surface irrigation, and three nutrient levels viz., F1: Farm Yard Manure (FYM) 25 t ha-1 + 50% recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF), F2: FYM 25t ha-1 + 100% RDF and F3:100% RDF. Cumulative irrigation water was calculated and applied as per the treatment schedule.

Interspecific hybrids between cultivars of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] with 2n = 2x = 14 and its wild relative Napier Grass [Pennisetum purpureum (K.) Schum] with 2n = 4x = 28, which have multicut behaviour, perennial nature, high biomass and drought tolerance traits for crop improvement, were obtained by cross hybridization. Twenty hybrid progenies were obtained and then examined based on the morphological traits. Nine of them were confirmed to be true interspecific hybrids.
