There are a number of well-recognized indicators of biological risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and death for which change over some period of time can be determined from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Collection of some measures began as early as the 1960s, and some are not available until the 1980s. NHANES data show that the percentage of the older population with high cholesterol has decreased since the 1960s, somewhat faster for women than men (60).

In 2003/04 a second Nepal Living Standards Survey (NLSS II) was conducted, which helped track changes in the living standards of the Nepalese population over the eight years since 1995/96. However, to fulfill the demand for national and regional level socio-economic and demographic data, the GoN carried out several national demographic and health surveys to supplement and complement the censuses.

Besides conducting national censuses, the CBS is a primary source of information for multi-sectoral data in the country. It was in the early nineties that the CBS established a separate Household Survey Section (HSS). This section initiated four small-scale surveys with funding from the GoN. Then a comprehensive survey for Nepal was launched by the CBS in 1995/96 through its multi-topic (consumption, income, housing, labor markets, education, health etc.) national household survey called the Nepal Living Standards Survey (NLSS I) with financial assistance from the World Bank.

Contraceptive use accounts for a substantial portion of the variation in observed fertility rates (others include age of marriage, abortion rates, post- partum amenorrhea and abstinence, and occurrence of marital separations). Although there have been dramatic increases in the use of family planning services, unmet need for family planning remains very high in low-prevalence regions.

As noted through the research, a core demand of women living with HIV is increased access to contraceptives and other materials that can help increase their control over their reproductive lives. They also want better access to family planning counselling and sexual and reproductive rights information as part of routine health care. Recent steps appear to have been taken to address these needs.

There has been some concern that the use of the endocervical brush can result in the appearance of a much greater number of endocervical cells in a smear and that their arrangement in large sheets might mimic malignancy. To avoid this problem clinicians should inform the laboratory when an endocervical brush is used for collecting the smear.
