Ebook "Cellulose: Molecular and structural biology (Selected articles on the synthesis, structure, and applications of cellulose)" is an up-to-date treatise on the most advanced and provocative research into the biosynthesis, structure, and applications of Nature’s most abundant macromolecule and renewable resource, cellulose. Molecular, biochemical, and evolutionary aspects of cellulose biosynthesis are reviewed in a variety of living organisms, including cyanobacteria, eubacteria, vascular plants, and tunicates.

With amphiphilic properties, cellulose molecules are expected to adsorb at the O/W interface and be capable of stabilizing emulsions. The effect of solvent quality on the formation and stability of cellulose-based O/W emulsions was evaluated in different alkaline systems: NaOH, NaOH-urea and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH).

Nowadays nanoparticles are increasingly investigated for the targeted and controlled delivery of therapeutics, as suggested by the high number of research articles (2400 in 2000 vs 8500 in 2020). Among them, almost 2% investigated nanogels in 2020. Nanogels or nanohydrogels (NGs) are nanoparticles formed by a swollen threedimensional network of synthetic polymers or natural macromolecules such as polysaccharides.

Biochemical networks are often described through static or time-averaged measurements of the component macromolecules. Temporal variation in these components plays an important role in both describing the dynamical nature of the network as well as providing insights into causal mechanisms.

Following the recent trend of using natural ingredients from bio-macromolecules, biomaterials and plant extract in textile chain, this research aims to develop an antibacterial textile finishing with tannin extracted from piper betle plant. The extracting processes were carried out with different solvent: distilled water, ethanol 30 %, ethanol 50 %, ethanol 70 % for 60 minutes. Two important types of fabric, including cotton and CVC (Cotton/Polyester) were padded with piper betle extracts, then dried at 60 oC for 5 minutes.

The primary objective is to collaborate with or conduct research consistent with the division activities in measurement science, standards, technology, and data required to support the nation’s needs in determining the composition, structure, quantity, and function of biomolecules. In partnership with U.S. industry, government agencies, and scientific institutions, the division performs fundamental and applied research on the measurement of macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, as well as peptides, glycans, metabolites, lipids, and natural products.

Biomimetics is the science of emulating nature’s design. In nature, living organisms synthesize mineralized tissues and this process of biomineralization is under strict biological control. It involves the interactions of several biological macromolecules among themselves and with the mineral components. Generally, natures design principles are based on a “Bott om-Up” strategy. Such processes lead to the formation of hierarchically structured organic-inorganic composites with mechanical properties optimized for a given function.
