Nature of inheritance of yield

  • Most traits targeted in the genetic improvement of hop are quantitative in nature. Improvement based on selection of these traits requires a comprehensive understanding of their inheritance. This study estimated quantitative genetic parameters for 20 traits related to three key objectives for the genetic improvement of hop: cone chemistry, cone yield and agronomic characteristics.

  • Combining ability analysis (GCA) enables plant breeders to select parental lines for crossing and provides the opportunity to understand the nature of gene actions involved in the inheritance of desired traits. In this study, we used a line x tester mating design to generate 30 hybrid crosses using three restorer (R) and ten cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS; A) lines.

  • This experiment was having two sub experiments viz., cross SPV245 x SPV 1822 (A X C) and SPV 1430 x SPV 1822 (B X C). Test crosses for this experiment was obtained by crossing the 10 MS lines with both the parents and their F1‟s for both the sets. In this way the each sub experiment was having 30 hybrids. Both the sub experiments were conducted in RBD with three replications following the 45 cm between rows and 10 cm between plants spacing. In present investigation difference between testers in line in both sets of TTC were significant.

  • Attempts has made to find the inheritance pattern of free threshability and other quantitative traits in emmer wheat has fragile rachis and non-free threshing kernels by crossing a non free threshing variety dicoccum DDK-1025, with two advanced free threshable mutant lines (ML-1 and ML-2) during Rabi 2013. Genetic systems operating in the both the crosses were found different for most of the characters as evident by differences in nature of gene action in these two crosses.

  • The nature and magnitude of gene action was analysed using six generations viz., P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 for yield and yield contributing characters in four inter varietal crosses of okra. The scaling and joint scaling tests indicated the presence of epistatic gene effect for all the characters in four crosses. Duplicate epistasis was predominant in most of the yield and yield attributing characters in all the four crosses except number of fruits per plant, which showed complimentary epistasis.

  • Sesame is an important oilseed crop not only in India also across the world. Studying nature of inheritance of sesame plant characteristics is essential for planning effective breeding programme. The present investigation was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, J.A.U., Amreli and Department of Seed Science and Technology, College of Agriculture, Sagadividi Farm, J.A.U., Junagadh, Gujarat. These 40 hybrids along with a two checks, G.Til-2 and G.Til-3 were evaluated in a four environments were created through different time and location for sowing during summer 2016.

  • In the present investigation a study was conducted to assess the nature and magnitude of yield attributing characters. The inheritance of the character viz; plant height and flower to pod ratio was controlled by additive gene action. The rest of the nine characters under the control of non additive gene action therefore the heterosis breeding is recommended to exploit the benefit of hybrid vigor. Heritability is good index of the transmission of character from parents to their offspring.

  • The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the sixty foxtail millet germplasm to access the nature and magnitude of genetic variability for yield and yield component traits. The experiment was laid out in Augmented Randomized Complete Block Design (ARCBD) at RARS, Lam, Guntur during kharif, 2018-19. The analysis of variance indicated significant differences for most of the traits viz.

  • The nature of the inheritance of plant height at 60 days, number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and number of seeds per fruit was studied from a 10-parent diallel cross of Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Due to their high general combining ability effects, Pusharubi, Bari-4, and Dynasagor parents were suggested for future hybridisation programmes.
