This book should make it possible for the surgeon to orient himself before and during an operation without loss of time. Recent accident injuries which require immediate treatment often unexpectedly confront the less experienced surgeon with difficult problems of plastic surgery. If too little consideration is given to the later cosmetic result during the first operation, one can compensate for this omission only by more extensive plastic surgery. Even then it can be difficult to obtain passably good results. The best chances are thrown away in this manner.

Patients with large cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp are a treatment challenge. We report a case of dramatic radiotherapy response of a patient with a giant cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the scalp with extensive skull destruction and suspected infiltration of the dura mater and superior sagittal sinus

Postoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is a standard therapy for patients with high-risk factors for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, including positive margin and extra-nodal extension (ENE). However, the prognostic impact of the number of pathological metastatic lymph nodes (pLNs) in hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HPC) is unclear.

Extranodal extension (ENE) is an adverse prognostic factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and patients with OSCC along with ENE require neck dissection. In this study, we developed a novel ENE histologybased pathological predictor using MMP14 expression patterns in small biopsy specimens.

We report on a patient who presented to the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) clinic with an 8-month-old left non-pulsatile tinnitus. Imaging studies, Neck computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed soft tissue mass in the left middle ear with invasion to the middle cranial fossa and external auditory canal.

Head and neck tissue defects are frequently, especially deep and wide defects caused by burning. Choosing sufficient material is a big challenge for surgeons. Using double anterolateral thigh perforator flaps in chimeric type is a new method, a new idea with many advantages for providing large tissue volume to reconstruct extensive defects in face and head area.

Extranodal extension (ENE) is a poor prognostic factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Identifying ENE by clinical and/or radiological examination is difficult, thereby leading to unnecessary neck dissections. Currently, no definitive predictors are available for ENE.

The sniffing position (neck flexion by head elevation and head extension) is commonly used for insertion of a laryngeal mask airway. However, the appropriate degrees of head elevation and head extension are unclear. In the present study, the success rate of ProSeal™ laryngeal mask airway (LMA ProSeal) insertion using two degrees of head elevation was evaluated.

A mouth gag is usually used during tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy surgeries, cleft palate repair, obstructive sleep apnea surgery, and intraoral tumor excision. The placement of the gag causes hemodynamic changes similar to laryngoscopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mouth gag placement on the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) of pediatric patients. The secondary aim was to assess the relationship between neck extension and changes in ONSD.

Maintaining cervical immobilization is essential during tracheal intubation in patients with unstable cervical spines. When using the Macintosh laryngoscope for intubation in patients with cervical immobilization, substantial neck extension is required for visualization of the glottis. However, the C-MAC D-Blade videolaryngoscope may require less neck extension due to its acute angulation.

The effort to improve tracheal intubation process is clinically valuable. We hypothesized that a preoperative brief exercise therapy would increase mouth opening and neck extension, enhancing intubation conditions during general anesthesia.

Clinicians sometimes encounter resistance in advancing a tracheal tube, which is inserted via a nostril, from the nasal cavity into the oropharynx during nasotracheal intubation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of neck extension on the advancement of tracheal tubes from the nasal cavity into the oropharynx during nasotracheal intubation.

Treponema Pallidum (TP), the pathogen of syphilis, commonly infects bones in cases of congenital and tertiary syphilis, but it is rare in the primary and secondary stages. With its mild symptoms and rare clinical findings, it might be easy to dismiss the diagnosis of early syphilis.

Upright head and neck position has been frequently applied as baseline for diagnosis of neck problems. However, the variance of the position after cervical motions has never been demonstrated. Thus, it is unclear if the baseline position varies evenly across the cervical joints.

Fractures of the proximal and diaphyseal femur are frequently internally fixed using a fracture table. Moreover, some femoral neck fractures may be treated with total hip arthroplasty using a direct anterior approach and a traction table. Fracture and traction tables both use a boot tightly fitted to the patient’s foot in order to: 1) obtain fracture reduction by traction and adequate rotation exerted on the slightly abducted or adducted extremity; or 2) adequately expose the hip joint using traction, rotation and extension to implant total hip arthroplasty components.

Oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) is one of the most aggressive forms of head and neck/oral cancer (HNOC), and is a complex disease with extensive genetic and epigenetic defects, including microRNA deregulation. Identifying the deregulation of microRNA-mRNA regulatory modules (MRMs) is crucial for understanding the role of microRNA in OTSCC.

The head and neck is a region of considerable anatomical and functional complexity, making the accurate staging of a head and neck neoplasm a challenging task. The clinician often detects pathology, but may not appreciate, based on the physical examination, the entire submucosal tumor extension, nor the possible regional and distant disease spread. The introduction of CT and MRI has revolutionized head and neck radiology. Current radiological modalities provide a reliable visualization of the head and neck structures to an unprecedented level of detail.

Physiologic Vertigo This occurs in normal individuals when (1) the brain is confronted with an intersensory mismatch among the three stabilizing sensory systems; (2) the vestibular system is subjected to unfamiliar head movements to which it is unadapted, such as in seasickness; (3) unusual head/neck positions, such as the extreme extension when painting a ceiling; or (4) following a spin.
