Serious psychological distress (SPD) is common and more prevalent in women, older adults, and individuals with a low-income. Prior studies have highlighted the role of low neighborhood social cohesion (nSC) in potentially contributing to SPD; however, few have investigated this association in a large, nationally representative sample of the United States.

Although socioeconomic status (SES) has been shown to modify associations between the neighborhood built environment and physical activity, contradictory results exist. Objectives of this cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis were to: 1) examine whether overall neighborhood walkability and specific built characteristics were associated with walking among adults at a single point in time and after they relocate neighborhoods, and 2) test for efect modifcation of these associations by SES.

The happiness of older adults living alone warrants attention because they are more vulnerable to unhappiness than those living with families. The present study aimed to construct and test a structural equation model to elucidate the relationship among participation in social activities, satisfaction with the neighborhood environment, subjective health status, and happiness in older adults living alone in South Korea.

Disparities by race and neighborhood socioeconomic status exist for many colorectal cancer (CRC) outcomes, including screening use and mortality. We used population-based data to determine if disparities also exist for emergency CRC diagnosis and surgery.

To increase school diversity, geographic boundaries for St. Paul's neighborhood schools are not always contiguous; magnet schools include socioeconomic status (specifically, whether a student qualifies for reduced-cost or free lunch programs) among their selection criteria (Schellenberg and Porter, 2003). In 1974 almost all students in the St. Paul school district attended a school located in or near their neighborhood. Today, any public school student [in the US, `public schools' refers to schools receiving most of their funding from public government (tax-based) monies] in St.

Neighborhoods may influence late-life health through a number of pathways (see Figure 1). The IOM (1991) disablement framework, which distinguishes among disease, functional limitation, and disability, serves as the starting point for this framework. We extend the IOM framework to include mortality and self-rated general health status, which are both influenced by disease, functional limitation, and disability, as well as the variety of individual and neighborhood factors that influence health in general.

A growing literature has demonstrated that neighborhoods of residence affect health and may contribute to socioeconomic disparities in health. Contextual effects have been documented across a wide spectrum of populations, including both children and adults. However, neighborhood effects on the health of the elderly are currently understudied. Neighborhoods of residence across the lifecourse are likely to affect health status in late life and to contribute to observed disparities for several reasons.

The neighborhoods and communities that adolescents live in may also influence their reproductive health behaviors. Numerous studies show that adolescents living in disadvantaged communities with high poverty rates and low levels of socioeconomic status have a greater risk of early sexual initiation and a greater risk of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing (Brewster, Billy, & Grady, 1993; Hogan & Kitagawa, 1985; Sucoff & Upchurch, 1998). Alternately, living in a community with higher socioeconomic status is associated with a reduced risk of risky sexual activity.
