Neonatal screening

The introduction of Picterus JP as a supporting tool to screen for neonatal jaundice is promising but contextual barriers in the setting must be addressed for successful implementation. There is also an opportunity to optimise visual assessment to improve detection of neonatal jaundice.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive disease that belongs to a group of disorders resulting from inborn errors of protein metabolism. It was the first disease included in neonatal screening. Neonatal screening has allowed an early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Gestational Diabetes has been defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with an onset, or first recognition during pregnancy (Beckmann et al., 2005). GDM affects between 2% to 5% of pregnant women. Increasing levels of plasma glucose are associated with birth weight above the 90th percentile, and primary caesarean deliveries and neonatal hyperglycemia. Risk factors for GDM include a history of macrosomia, strong family history of diabetes, and obesity.

Several studies both worldwide and in our country recommends that pregnant females should be screened for HBV infection prevents the growing foetus and the neonate from getting chronically ill by the infection. This study is done to determine the seroprevalence of HBsAg among pregnant individuals.

This fraction and the ethanol extract from green tea were also able to induce the expression of hyperpolarizationactivated cyclic nucleotide-gated channel 4 (HCN4), the important factor for automatic beating of SAN, but insignificantly (P > 0.05). In conclusion, neonatal cardiomyocytes were isolated and suitable for use as a model for screening of pacemaker cell transduction effects of potential candidates. From this study, the garlic ethyl acetate fraction presented as the most promising nominee for further neonatal cardiomyocyte transdifferentiating effects.

The aim of this study was to determine, retrospectively, the serum 25OHD and calcium concentrations of screened neonates of mothers at high risk of 25OHD deficiency and examine whether their measurement contributes to the management of these neonates.

The guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for monitoring neonatal jaundice recommend universal postnatal screening for hyperbilirubinemia within 48 h from discharge. We observed that neonate with low-risk jaundice were more likely to be readmitted to hospital for phototherapy compared to neonate with high-risk jaundice.

Early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis continues to pose a problem to the clinician caring for newborns. Blood culture has been considered the gold standard for confirmation of diagnosis. An array of sepsis screen tests are now available for early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. To study the role of sepsis screen tests in early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Blood cultures and sepsis screen tests were carried out on 200 neonates.

Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome of bacteremia characterized by systemic signs and symptoms of infection in the first month of life. It has been a challenge with its high incidence and grave prognosis, despite adequate treatment with modern antibiotics. The signs and symptoms are protean with a high mortality and thus there is urgent need to know whether the baby has sepsis. Confirmation of the diagnosis by definitive culture is not rapidly possible.

The aim of the current study was to identify the prevalence of bovine rotavirus infection in bovine calves aged from 1 day to 2 months old in Gujarat region. Studied samples were divided into 4 age groups, age group I (1-10 days) age group II 911-20 days), age group III (21-30 days) and age group IV (31-60 days). All the samples were screened by latex agglutination test (LAT), ELISA and RT-PCR technique. Among the 117 fecal sample screened, 23.93%, 15.38% and 22.22%found positive for Rotavirus by LAT, ELISA and RT-PCR respectively.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, especially kernicterus, can be prevented by screening for neonatal jaundice. The transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) meter is a non-invasive medical device for screening neonates. The study aimed to investigate the validity of a TcB meter in a resource-limited setting such as Mongolia.

Developments in enzyme replacement therapy have kindled discussions on adding Pompe disease, characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting, to neonatal screening. Pompe disease does not fit traditional screening criteria as it is a broad-spectrum phenotype disorder that may occur in lethal form in early infancy or manifest in less severe forms from infancy to late adulthood.
