Neonatal tetanus with good outcomes at a regional referral hospital in Eastern Uganda: A case report
Neonatal tetanus, though now rare in developed countries, is still a significant cause of mortality in developing countries. Mortality, which can be as high as 100% without medical intervention, can be reduced to less than 10% with intensive care.

The most common causes of death in neonatal period are infections (32%) including septicemia, meningitis, pneumonia, diarrhea and neonatal tetanus. It has also been documented that birth asphyxia contributes for 29% of deaths in neonatal period. Patients presented to department of pediatrics (NICU), were examined clinically by pediatricians and 122 cases of neonatal septicemia were identified on the basis of the signs and symptoms and were included for the study. This is followed by collection of blood for culture after obtaining informed expressed written consent.

Tetanus is a neurologic disorder, characterized by increased muscle tone and spasms, that is caused by tetanospasmin, a powerful protein toxin elaborated by Clostridium tetani. Tetanus occurs in several clinical forms, including generalized, neonatal, and localized disease. †A contributor to HPIM since the 12th edition, Dr. Abrutyn passed away on February 22, 2007. Etiologic Agent C. tetani is an anaerobic, motile, gram-positive rod that forms an oval, colorless, terminal spore and thus assumes a shape resembling a tennis racket or drumstick.
