Ebook "Practical problems in soil mechanics and foundation engineering - Volume 2" discusses the problems of weed control in sugarcane against the background of world-wide cultivation, with emphasis on Taiwan's intensive pattern of crop farming. After a brief botanical description of sugarcane and its cultivation in relation to weed control, the weeds themselves are studied. Chemical control of weeds, problems of crop tolerance and responses of weed species to chemicals are examined.

Herbicide tolerance is an important trait that allows effective weed management in wheat crops. Genetic knowledge of metribuzin tolerance in wheat is needed to develop new cultivars for the industry. Here, we evaluated metribuzin tolerance in a recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population derived from Synthetic W7984 and Opata 85 over two consecutive years to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) contributing to the trait.

To meet the food requirement of a huge population the food grain production need to be enhanced accordingly. However the goal of higher production must not come at the cost of heavy exploitation of natural resources. In order to attain higher yields, need of the hour is to develop and promote new technologies and reform agricultural research. Nanotechnology holds promise in improving the fertilizer use efficiency of fertilizers. The unique properties can be exploited beneficially for improving the nutrient use efficiency.

Aerobic rice is a new way of cultivating rice that requires less water than lowland rice. Direct sown aerobic rice suffers more due to weed menace as the weeds and rice compete for growth factors together. Achieving higher rice grain yields under aerobic conditions requires better weed management practices. Hence, the aerobic rice should be focused primarily on efficient weed management to make aerobic rice cultivation more efficient in terms of returns on farmer investments and use of water resources.

It was examined that weeds cause a lot of problems in the crop field. Weeds compete with the main crop for nutrients, water, food, space, sunlight etc. Weeds utilize the nutrients provided to the main crop and sometimes dominate the main crop. Some weeds are very noxious and they are harmful for both humans as well as animals. It is clearly revealed from studies done in field of weeds that use of herbicides used to control weeds cause many effects on soil as it leads to degradation in the quality of soil, water as well as it pollutes environment.
