Nickel hyperaccumulating plants

Recent exploration of an area of ultramafic geology in south-western Turkey led to the discovery and description of a new species, Bornmuellera kiyakii Aytaç & Aksoy (Brassicaceae). This was of particular interest to us because of the earlier discovery of nickel hyperaccumulation (Ni concentrations exceeding 0.1% of plant dry weight) in 6 other taxa in this small genus from Albania, Greece, and Turkey.

Natural plants in Turkish serpentine soils were surveyed to determine their Ni accumulation capability. Geographic distribution and diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable nickel contents of the western Anatolian serpentine soils and their vegetative contents were studied to fi nd the possible relationships between the phytoavailable Ni amount in the soil and the Ni content of potential accumulator plants.

Alyssum corsicum Duby is a candidate plant used for phytomining and phytoremediation studies with its high Ni-accumulating ability of the aboveground tissues. Metal localization and concentration by hyperaccumulator plants and the physiological basis of these phenomena have been of great interest in recent years. A. corsicum seeds were grown at different concentrations of Ni in Murashige and Skoog medium.

Botanical exploration of serpentine soils in Turkey and neighbouring countries has shown that the region includes at least 59 taxa capable of hyperaccumulating nickel (to >0.1% of plant dry weight).
