Two novel extraction chromatography resins (ECRs) containing two diglycolamide (DGA) -functionalized calix[4]arenes with n-propyl and isopentyl substituents at the amide nitrogen atom, termed as ECR-1 and ECR-2, respectively, were evaluated for the uptake of Th(IV) from nitric acid feed solutions.

This article draws a state of knowledge of the dissolution of uranium dioxide in nitric acid media. The chemistry of the reaction is first investigated, and two reactions appear as most suitable to describe the mechanism, leading to the formation of monoxide and dioxide nitrogen as reaction by-products, while the oxidation mechanism is shown to happen before solubilization.

The procedure for determination of 238 U, 234 U, 232 Th, 230 Th and 228 Th nuclides by alpha spectroscopy was developed. Nuclides of uranium (U) and thorium (Th) were separated from the soil samples by chromatographic method. In the medium of 8 M nitric acid, U(VI) and Th(IV) were adsorbed on the Dowex 1 anion resin column. However, U(VI) was eluted from column by increasing the used volume of 8 M nitric acid. Th(IV) was eluted from the column with 50 ml HCl 9 M.
