  • The study was conducted on six healthy non-descript goats of either sex weighing between 20-25 kg by administrating atropine sulphate (0.04 mg/kg I/M) followed by medetomidine (10 µg/kg I/M) and 15 min. later followed by induction of anaesthesia with ketofol (5mg/kg I/V). After medetomidine administration, lowering of head was observed in all the animals within 4.20±0.33 min. After ketofol injection, there was rapid and smooth onset of anaesthesia (0.550.15 min). There was marked sedation with protrusion of tongue from buccal cavity, profuse salivation was noticed.

  • Cesarean section is a life-saving surgical procedure usually undertaken in sheep and goats that fail to deliver vaginally (dystocia). A local non descript breed of sheep was presented to veterinary teaching clinical complex with difficulty in parturition. Fetal examination revealed dead fetus with no fetal reflex. Cesarean section was undertaken in ewe and the dead fetus was successfully taken out followed by post operative care. The case was followed up for 2 weeks after treatment and the ewe was bright and alert and responded well to the treatment.

  • Two three month old female non descriptive kids were presented to Pudupalayam Veterinary dispensary, Department of Animal husbandry, Erode, Tamil Nadu with history of anorexia, generalized alopecia and slight throat enlargement during the month of May 2016. Affected part of skin was thin, dry, hard and showed increased sensitiveness to palpation. Laboratory investigation of skin scraping and faecal samples revealed no organisms of etiological significance.

  • A seven year old female goat weighing 33 kg was presented with history of ingestion of unknown of Urea fertilizer before half an hour. Clinically animal was active and physiological parameters like rectal temperature and respiration rates were within normal range. Tachycardia and mild bloat with reduced rumen motility was also noted. The goat was given Inj. Normal Saline@ 25ml/kg body weight along with Inj. Dexamethasone@ 2mg/kg, Inj. Atropine Sulphate@ 0.02mg/kg body weight intravenous. Inj. Enrofloxacin@ 2.5mg/kg body weight intramuscular was given.

  • Hydrometra is one of the causes of infertility in goats and this condition is also called as pseudo pregnancy or cloud burst. A primiparous non-descript doe aged two and half years was presented to Referral veterinary polyclinic (Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics section) of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar with distended abdomen and history of breeding five months back. On ventral abdominal palpation and per-vaginal examination, no any fetal structures or palpable mass was felt. All the vital parameters were within the normal range.

  • Contagious pustular dermatitis (CPD) is an acute, highly contagious, zoonotic, debilitating and economically important viral non-systematic eruptive skin disease of small ruminants. In this report, occurrence of atypical caprine contagious pustular dermatitis associated with pneumonia in a goat flock is described. An outbreak of pox like disease was noticed in four out of 18 non-descript goats during June 2018, in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. Affected animals showed multiple, discrete, edematous nodular lesions and crust formation throughout its body surface with respiratory symptoms.

  • Two non descript goats of age 1 and 1.5 years was presented at Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC), PGIVER, Jaipur with history of pyrexia, anorexia, nasal discharge, lameness and various skin lesions on muzzle, lips and mouth. On physical examination, it was found that the lesion was dry ulcerative and scabby. Auscultation revealed a significant crackling sound suggestive of pneumonia. The aforesaid clinical pictures pointed towards orf infection. Both cases were treated with antibiotics and topical therapy till clinical recovery. Both goats were clinically recovered after treatment.

  • The choice of local breed depends upon availability in a particular region. Preferably, only the non-descript local animals and very lowly productive animals of recognized breeds should be used for crossbreeding. The destruction of valuable indigenous breeds with unique adaptability characters for those particular agro-climatic conditions should be avoided. Indigenous animals should be properly characterized prior to initiating crossbreeding to identify breeds with particularly valuable characteristics.
