Ebook "Handbook of nuclear chemistry (Second edition)" set covers all of the chemical aspects of nuclear science starting from the physical basics and including such diverse areas as the chemistry of transactinides and exotic atoms as well as radioactive waste management and radiopharmaceutical chemistry relevant to nuclear medicine. The nuclear methods of the investigation of chemical structure also receive ample space and attention.

Disposal of spent nuclear fuel is a major political and public-perception problem for nuclear energy. From a radiological standpoint, the long-lived component of spent nuclear fuel primarily consists of transuranic (TRU) isotopes.

Full recycling of transuranic (TRU) isotopes can in theory lead to a reduction in repository radiotoxicity to reference levels in as little as ~500 years provided reprocessing and fuel fabrication losses are limited. However, over a limited timeframe, the radiotoxicity of the ‘final’ core can dominate over reprocessing losses, leading to a much lower reduction in radiotoxicity compared to that achievable at equilibrium.

A Radioactive Waste Information Management System (RAWINGS) currently in operation mainly manages the inventory and history of the operating waste. The system has the disadvantages of the entered information needing to be transferred manually from the site to the system, information getting incorrectly entered during the process or information going missing.

Upon the commencement of the phase-three decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), strategy construction is a necessary step for effective radioactive waste management as well as safe project implementation. In this study, we evaluate safety and environmental detriment (SED) score of radioactive materials in the expected major stages of the project for the strategy construction.

Managing radioactive waste must be carried out within a strict framework and with a constant requirement to protect human beings and the environment. A safety management of the radioactive material or waste (RAM or RW) unavoidably involves transportation activities by using robust safe and reliable packaging system.

The present paper analyses the trends in the global development of nuclear energy, the political background of the RW disposal, types of radioactive wastes, and their burial in Russia. The results achieved allow improving the typical LRD model for managing international nuclear enterprises by limiting the influence of commercial interests.

Nuclear decommissioning is a worldwide competitive market. It is also the main source of radioactive waste from the nuclear energy field. In order to reduce the waste volume it is necessary to sort the actual radioactive waste to be disposed of and to separate them from other materials that could be recycled.

Study of nuclear fuel cycle in Vietnam at the aspect of domestic production, the exploitation and process of uranium ore were began. These processes generated large amounts of radioactive waste overtiming. The naturally occurring radioactive material and technologically enhanced radioactive material (NORM/TENORM) waste, which would be large, needs to be managed and disposed reasonably by effective methods.

Another closely-related dynamic is a fundamental shift that is taking place in terms of priority geographic markets. A 2011 global CEO survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC’s Growth Reimagined) found that the large majority of corporate executives have shifted their primary focus to developing markets. Although doing business in these markets is nothing new, making them the primary target market, where firms plan to invest the majority of their efforts and expect the majority of their future sales, is new and significant.

During my career, some 35 years, there has been a growing realization that the goal of successful nuclear waste management and the final disposal of long-lived radionuclides can only be attained by a thorough understanding of the behavior of key, technogenic radionuclides in the environment. Within a nuclear reactor, these radionuclides are created by fission, neutron capture and subsequent beta-decay reactions on actinides, mainly 238 U, and by activation nuclear reactions.

The environmental goods and services (EGS) sector has traditionally included solutions for problems such as air, noise and marine pollution, land and water contamination, as well as activities such as environmental analysis and consultancy and waste management and recycling. However more recently, the definition of this sector has widened.

The present book is the final milestone in the radioecology programme, RAD, carried out from 1990 to 1993 under the Nordic Committee for Nuclear Safety Research, NKS. This work was done in parallel to three other NKS programmes: Reactor safety (SIK), Waste and decommissioning (KAN), and Emergency preparedness (BER). The NKS was established in 1966 and was financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers from 1977 to 1989.
