Full recycling of transuranic (TRU) isotopes can in theory lead to a reduction in repository radiotoxicity to reference levels in as little as ~500 years provided reprocessing and fuel fabrication losses are limited. However, over a limited timeframe, the radiotoxicity of the ‘final’ core can dominate over reprocessing losses, leading to a much lower reduction in radiotoxicity compared to that achievable at equilibrium.

During my career, some 35 years, there has been a growing realization that the goal of successful nuclear waste management and the final disposal of long-lived radionuclides can only be attained by a thorough understanding of the behavior of key, technogenic radionuclides in the environment. The present book is the final milestone in the radioecology programme, RAD, carried out from 1990 to 1993 under the Nordic Committee for Nuclear Safety Research, NKS. This work was done in parallel to three other NKS programmes: Reactor safety (SIK), Waste and decommissioning (KAN), and Emergency preparedness (BER). The NKS was established in 1966 and was financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers from 1977 to 1989.
