Disposal of spent nuclear fuel is a major political and public-perception problem for nuclear energy. From a radiological standpoint, the long-lived component of spent nuclear fuel primarily consists of transuranic (TRU) isotopes.

Full recycling of transuranic (TRU) isotopes can in theory lead to a reduction in repository radiotoxicity to reference levels in as little as ~500 years provided reprocessing and fuel fabrication losses are limited. However, over a limited timeframe, the radiotoxicity of the ‘final’ core can dominate over reprocessing losses, leading to a much lower reduction in radiotoxicity compared to that achievable at equilibrium.

Deep borehole disposal (DBD) is being increasingly seen as a viable and potentially superior alternative to comparatively shallow mined repository concepts for disposal of some high-level radioactive wastes. We report here details of proof-of-concept investigations into the use of cementitious grouts as sealing/ support matrices for use in low temperature DBD scenarios.

Finland and Sweden are the countries with the most advanced plans for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Both countries have also been evoked as good examples in the use of a ’partnering’ approach, designed to achieve both a licensable site supported by the community and a balance between fair representation and competent participation.

High-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal is considered to constitute a disposal system within a deep rock mass using deep geological repository. A deep geological disposal system has an engineered barrier system (EBS) consisting of canisters, buffer material, and backfill material.

A Radioactive Waste Information Management System (RAWINGS) currently in operation mainly manages the inventory and history of the operating waste. The system has the disadvantages of the entered information needing to be transferred manually from the site to the system, information getting incorrectly entered during the process or information going missing.

Americium is a strong contributor to the long term radiotoxicity of high activity nuclear waste. Transmutation by irradiation in nuclear reactors of long-lived nuclides like 241Am is therefore an option for the reduction of radiotoxicity and heat production of waste packages to be stored in a repository.

The removal of Sr, Cd, and Pb from nuclear and industrial waste is important as these are harmful to living organisms and the environment. Immobilization of these ions in a zeolite framework is a simple and suitable method. However, zeolites are easily dehydrated at high temperatures.
