Numerical maintenance model

The aim of this Masters of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis was to investigate the durability of Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors (PWAS) for the health monitoring of composite structures. One significant challenge faced by the aviation industry is the cost and time associated with maintaining aircrafts, in particular, aging airliners. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a possible approach to reduce the high cost of inspection and maintenance.

This paper attempts to develop a numerical maintenance model to determine the optimal inspection regime to be followed for shipboard machinery. The maintenance modelling is carried out by Delay Time Analysis using a down time estimation model.

Economic production quantity (EPQ) model is analyzed for trended demand and the units which are subject to constant rate of deterioration. The system allows rework of imperfect units and preventive maintenance time is random. The proposed methodology, a search method used to study the model, is validated by a numerical example. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the critical model parameters.
