This paper presents an extension of the Proportional Topology Optimization (PTO) with virtual elements for multi-material problems with mass and cost constraints. In particular, the linear virtual element method (VEM) is constructed on unstructured polygonal meshes. The linear VEM is desirable in the sense that numerical integration is not explicitly required, significantly reducing the computational effort.

Adaptive Neuro-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms were utilized to produce numerical tools for predicting the bond strength between the concrete surface and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. From the relevant literature, a credible database encompassing 242 test specimens was developed, along with six input factors that primarily determine bond strength.

In this paper, we consider an explicit method that is strong convergence in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and a simple variant of the hybrid steepest-descent method, introduced by Yamada. The strong convergence of this method is proved under some mild conditions. Finally, we give an application for the optimization problem and present some numerical experiments to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper extends a numerical procedure for limit ananlysis of 3-D structures using node-based smoothed finite element method (NS-FEM) in combination with second-order cone programming (SOCP). The obtained discretization formulation is then cast in a form which involves second-order cone constraints, ensuring that the underlying optimization problem can be solved by highly efficient primaldual interior point algorithm. Furthermore, in the NS-FEM, the system stiffness matrix is computed using the smoothed strains over the smoothing domains associated with nodes.

In this paper, an improved version of Differential Evolution algorithm, called iDE, is introduced to solve design optimization problems of composite laminated beams. The beams used in this research are Timoshenko beam models computed based on analytical formula. The iDE is formed by modifying the mutation and the selection step of the original algorithm. Particularly, individuals involved in mutation were chosen by Roulette wheel selection via acceptant stochastic instead of the random selection.

In this paper, we introduce a hedge-algebras-based methodology in vibration control of structural systems to design fuzzy controllers, referred to as hedge-algebras-based controllers (HACs). In this methodology, vague linguistic terms are not expressed by fuzzy sets, but by inherent order relationships between vague terms existing in a term-domain. Semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs), which preserve semantics-based order relationships in termdomains, are defined in a close relationship with the fuzziness measure and the fuzziness intervals of vague terms.

The purpose of this paper is to present a new and an alternative differential evolution (ADE) algorithm for solving unconstrained global optimization problems. In the new algorithm, a new directed mutation rule is introduced based on the weighted difference vector between the best and the worst individuals of a particular generation. The mutation rule is combined with the basic mutation strategy through a linear decreasing probability rule. This modification is shown to enhance the local search ability of the basic DE and to increase the convergence rate.
