Chromium is necessary for insulin function, nutrient uptake and regulation of major metabolism as well as boosting of immune system amongst others; available in vegetables, the cheapest source for the majority of people living in developing countries. Seven commonly consumed vegetables in south west Nigeria were collected from four major markets in the region, thoroughly mixed and prepared for laboratory analysis.

Legumes represent major sources of nutrients and their nutritive value depends upon the processing methods applied. The objective of this study was to determine the effect processing on proximate and mineral compositions of ‘hepho’ (Lablab purpureus L.). Hepho is the Afan Oromo name for black climbing bean Lablab purpureus L. which is an indigenous legume in Ethiopia.

Edible insects are an important source of nutrients that can help to cover certain nutritional deficiencies. This is the case with Macrotermes subhyalinus, a species of termite widely consumed in Côte d'Ivoire. This study was carried out to assess the mineral content and their bioavailability in the different castes (winged, queen and soldier) of this species.

The microbial cells can store energy in the form of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) while the nutrient sources are exhausted but have an excess of carbon sources. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was known as one of the most common PHA. Currently, PHB is assessed as a potential alternative to petroleum-based plastics such as HDPE, PP.

Meat from Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds are an important source of nutrients for humans and intramuscular fat (IMF) influences its flavor, nutritional value and impacts human health. Human consumption of fat that contains high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) can reduce the concentration of undesirable cholesterol (LDL) in circulating blood.

The application of microalgae-based wastewater treatment systems using wastewater as a source of nutrients has been successfully developed in recent years and has brought about positive results in wastewater treatment and microalgal biomass recovery while producing valuable products. This study presents the application of a microalgae and activated sludge (AS) co-culture in a low agitation photobioreactor (aPBR), which could reduce energy usage.

In this study, laboratory wastewater containing organic matters, heavy metals and aromatic compounds, was treated by vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) as a phytoremediation. Sewage effluent as a source of nutrient supply for plant growth was first fed to two wetland systems: Mini horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) and floating raft (FR) wetlands.

The study "Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) production by Halomonas boliviensis in fed-batch culture" was undertaken to find strategies for improving the volumetric productivity of PHB by H. boliviensis using glucose as the carbon source. For this, it was considered important to determine the essential nitrogen source for the organism that would allow a better control of the supply of nutrients for optimal PHB production. Eventually, a fed-batch strategy was used to attain both high cell density and a suitable nutrient limitation mode that led to high polymer production.

The research article "Polyester production by halophilic and halotolerant bacterial strains obtained from mangrove soil samples located in Northern Vietnam" reports halophilic and halotolerant bacteria isolated from mangrove forests located in Northern Vietnam. Several of these bacteria were able to synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). PHAs are polyesters stored by microorganisms under the presence of considerable amounts of a carbon source and deficiency of other essential nutrient such as nitrogen or phosphorous.

Mule deer rely on fat and protein stored prior to the winter season as an energy source during the winter months when other food sources are sparse. Since associated microorganisms (‘microbiota’) play a significant role in nutrient metabolism of their hosts, we predicted that variation in the microbiota might be associated with nutrient storage and overwintering in mule deer populations.

Nghi Son is an economic zone oriented to developing heavy industry and petrochemicals and has potential to become the most substantial economic zone in the North Central region. The zone is also one of the potential waste sources polluting Thanh Hoa coastal waters. Numeric modeling using Delft3D software package with different scenarios: Current status scenario, controlled discharge scenario, and incident scenario was developed to simulate states of some pollutants of organics and nutrients from the zone to Thanh Hoa coastal waters in different periods.

The CV weed could be fed as a supplement to a poor-quality forage or fed solely without any negative effects. Feed intake, nutrient utilization, and gain can be improved when the weed is offered. The supplementation of cassava chips as a source of readily fermented carbohydrates to the weed has the potential to effectively improve nutrients utilization and benefits for lowering urinary N loss. A further study is needed to evaluate the effects of the weed on CH4 production and rumen fermentation characteristic.

Bovine milk is an important nutrient source for humans. Forage plays a vital role in dairy husbandry via affecting milk quality and quantity. However, the differences in mammary metabolism of dairy cows fed different forages remain elucidated. In this study, we utilized transcriptomic RNA-seq and iTRAQ proteomic techniques to investigate and integrate the differences of molecular pathways and biological processes in the mammary tissues collected from 12 lactating cows fed corn stover (CS, low-quality, n = 6) and alfalfa hay (AH, high-quality, n = 6).
