The objective of this thesis was to investigate the development of a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) which can be implanted in the eye to provide continuous monitoring of glaucoma conditions. Current glaucoma monitoring involves taking laboratory based intra ocular pressure (IOP) measurements. Endophthalmitis is an event which is considered to be quite rare nowadays. There are many studies on post cataract endophthalmitis but very few studies have come up on post cataract Bacillus endophthalmitis and our study focuses on a similar event. Our aim was to evaluate an outbreak of post operative endophthalmitis which took place in a hospital in north Kashmir and lasted over a period of three weeks. Elective cataract surgery was performed on patients, all above 50 years of age with intra ocular lens implantation.

This study was conducted to develop formulations of hydrocortisone butyrate (HB)-loaded poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PLGA NP) suspended in thermosensitive gel to improve ocular bioavailability of HB for the treatment of bacterial corneal keratitis. PLGA NP with different surfactants such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), pluronic F-108, and chitosan were prepared using oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion evaporation technique. NP were characterized with respect to particle size, entrapment efficiency, polydispersity, drug loading, surface morphology, zeta potential, and crystallinity.

Cogan’s syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by ocular and audiovestibular manifestations in its typical form and caries a wide variety of atypical manifestations. It is considered as an autoimmune disease. We present the first case in the literature of a 67 year old woman with the development of low grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in the mastoid bone in a preexisting history of atypical Cogan’s syndrome. The anatomical development of NHL was to a ‘‘target’’ organ of Cogan’s syndrome, which is the inner ear.

We noted factors such as a habitual face tilt or the presentation of anatomical dissociation (prominent nasal septum iso- lated or combined with small pupillary distance/endophthalmus) when present. There were, however, no clear trends or patterns providing support that anatomi- cal factors significantly contributed to the problem of working with a tilted gaze. Further investigation of the relation- ship between monocular signs and symp- toms, binocular function and ergonomics within the workplace is clearly needed. Others have proposed different variables to be considered.

A cholesterol-rich diet causes postprandial hyperlipaemia with an accumulation of chylomicrons. This accumulation leads to a redistribution of the very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), thereby determining the elimination of the coarsest particles, the residual chylomicrons, which promote the onset of atherogenesis [1]. For some years, cholesterol-rich food has been associated with the subsequent development of complications such as the formation of atheromatous plaque and lipid deposits at the ocular level.

The transcription factor p63 plays a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of epithelial tissues, including the ocular surface. In an effort to gain insight into the pathogenesis of keratitis caused by HSV-1, we determined the expression patterns of the p63 and Bax proteins in the Staatens Seruminstitute Rabbit Cornea cell line (SIRC). Methods: SIRC cells were infected with HSV-1 at various multiplicities and maintained for different periods of time. Virus replication was measured by indirect immunofluorescence assay and Western blot analysis.
