Okra cultivation

Salinization seriously threatens land use efficiency and crop yields across the world. Understanding the mechanisms plants use to protect against salt stress will help breeders develop salt-tolerant vegetable crops. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is an important vegetable crop of the mallow family, which is now cultivated in warm regions worldwide.

Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, commonly known as ‘ladies finger’ or ‘bhindi’ is an economically important common vegetable crop cultivated throughout the tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. Induced mutation is highly effective in enhancing natural genetic resources and has been used in developing improved cultivars. The effect of gamma irradiation on various morphological and yield attributing characters in M2 generation were studied.

Important vegetables grown in India are tomato, onion, brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, okra, peas etc. India contributes about 13 per cent of the world vegetable production and occupies first position in the cauliflower, second in onion and third in cabbage in the world. The present study was carried out during the year 2015-16 in Meerut district of West Uttar Pradesh. Total 80 respondents from these 2 blocks were selected by using proporsnate random sampling technique and data were collected by means of personal interview. The study revealed that overwhelming majority (81.

Climate variability is one of the most significant factors influencing year to year crop production, even in high-yield and high technology agricultural areas. Climate influences quantity and quality of water resources, hence the productivity of agricultural regions and activities of societal concern. Okra crop productivity (such as biological and economical yield) and phenophases of the okra were affected due to the climatic factor, agronomical and management.

In this research, thirty-seven okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) accessions selected from different eco-geographical regions of India were evaluated during two years (2011, 2012) for genetic variability, heritability and genetic association among fruit yield, quality and agronomical traits in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.

Okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench], is an important crop which is widely cultivated in different parts of the world mostly for human consumption and also for industrial use as fibre. The okra production in India, is hindered by occurrence viral diseases, like Yellow Vein Mosaic Virus (YVMV) disease and Okra Enation Leaf Curl Virus (OELCV) disease, spread by an insect vector, namely whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Gen), which affect okra production in terms of yield and fruit quality as well.

The research on the okra was the analysis of growth is usually used to find out the trend analysis of area, production and yields over a period of time. The growth in the area, production and yield of okra crop in Chhattisgarh was estimated using the compound growth rate and production function of the five year data. The area under okra has recorded mild annual increment and growth was negative significant. Most of the districts of Chhattisgarh in case of the cultivation of okra was found negative trend for area, production and yield.

Interspecific hybridization in okra is of immense value to exploit the diversity of species in the genus Abelmsochus for developing male sterile lines and/or advance breeding lines possessing resistance to YVMV and ELCV diseases. The present investigation was carried out during the year 2015-16 to study the pattern of interspecific hybridization in genus Ablemoschus involving ten wild species viz., A. angulosus var. angulosus, A. angulosus var. grandiflorus, A. caillei, A. ficulneus, A. manihot ssp. tetraphyllus, A. moschatus, A. tetraphyllus var. pungense, A. tetraphyllus var.

The study of heterosis would help in selection of heterotic crosses for commercial exploitation of F1 hybrids in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench). 45 F1s were developed by crossing 10 elite lines of okra in half diallel fashion during summer 2016. All 45 F1s along with their 10 parents and one standard control (Nunhems hybrid Shakti) were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates during late kharif (July to October) 2016 at ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Babbur Farm, Hiriyur, Chitradurga, Karnataka, India, for heterosis of yield and its components of okra.
