An experiment was conducted at Agroforestry Research Station, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar, Gujarat, India, The experiment was designed in randomized block design with four replications on 30 years old agroforestry tree plantation which consisted of four multipurpose tree species (MPTs) viz., Azadirachta indica, Prosopis cineraria, Prosopis juliflora and Acacia tortolis. Alternate bearing is a wide spread phenomenon in many fruit tree species and cause severe labour, marketing and economical problem. The term “alternate or biennial” bearing designate the production of a heavy fruit crop “On” year followed by a light fruit crop or trees may not bear a crop at all the next “Off” year. Alternate bearing is a widespread problem for growers of fruit trees, occurring in both evergreen and deciduous trees. It is more pronounced in old productive trees (more than 10 years) in comparison with the young productive trees (about 3-5 years).

Wood basic density (WBD), the biomass of plant cell walls per unit volume, is an important trait for elite tree selection in kraft pulp production. Here, we investigated the correlation between WBD and wood volumes or wood properties using 98 open-pollinated, 2.4 to 2.8 year-old hybrid Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis). Transcript levels of lignocellulose biosynthesis-related genes were studied.

Phalaenopsis orchids occupy a top position in the international market as pot plant. Commonly used media for growing Phalaenopsis orchid are coconut husk chips, tree bark, fir bark, cocopeat and sphagnum moss. Growing medium is important as it provides anchorage, retains moisture, nutrients and aerates the roots. In addition to these functions, a study was carried out to assess the possible growth promoting effects of sphagnum moss on orchids when used as growing medium. Eight month old hardened plants of Phalaenopsis ‘Magic Kiss’ were used for the trial.
