Onion seed production

Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a biennial bulb crop, produced all over the world. It is attacked by many diseases, out of which Purple blotch of onion caused by Alternaria porri (Ellis) Neerg causing heavy yield loss in both bulb production and seed production. Native Bacillus were isolated from the rhizosphere of vegetables and ornamental crops of the SHUATS campus and were identified through bio-chemical tests.

Onion [Allium cepa L.] is one of the most important commercial vegetable crops of Chitradurga district. It is mainly grown by small and marginal farmers. It is mainly grown for commercial bulb production during Kharif. Very less number of farmers goes for seed production during Rabi season with local varieties. This new extension approaches may help to farmers for technical interventions on seed production and self-reliance for quality seeds in district.

Seed priming with antioxidants can help the seeds to retain their viability for much longer, as the major cause of seed deterioration in onion seed is the production of ROS which is produced as the age of seed increases leading seeds to loose viability. Therefore use of antioxidants may have potential to be cost effective mechanism for prolonging the storage life.

A field experiments was conducted at NHRDF, Regional Research Station, Chitegaon, Nashik in three consecutive years during rabi 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 on onion variety NHRDF Red-2 for the management of onion thrips through basal application and spray of different insecticides. The soil application of the treatments was given before planting and spray was started at 10 DAP after the appearance of thrips and subsequently sprays were given at ten days interval.

Male sterility is characterized by non-functional pollen grains, while female gametes function normally. It occurs in nature sporadically, perhaps due to mutation. The phenomenon of male sterility is of great significance to produce cost effective hybrid seeds. Onion crop provides one of the rare examples of very early recognition of male sterility (Jones and Emsweller, 1936), its inheritance and use in hybrid seed production (Jones and Clarke, 1943). Since then male sterility has been reported in fairly large number of crops including vegetables.

Present investigation was conducted at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (HP) to study the effect of changing climatic conditions on seed yield of onion (Allium cepa L.) in mid hills of Himachal Pradesh. The meteorological data (30 years) and onion seed yield data (26 years) were collected; correlation and regression analysis between various weather parameters (temperature, rainfall and relative humidity) and onion seed productivity was done for productivity trend analysis.

A study is conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pilicode for developing an instant curry paste with coconut kernel as base material which is in line with a traditional cuisine in Malabar region of Kerala. Spicy curry paste from desiccated coconut was prepared without any preservatives using virgin coconut oil, salt, curry leaf, guar gum, papaya starch, tapioca starch, jack fruit seed flour, onion powder and garlic powder along with an ideal blend of spices for instant, easy and fast cooking.

The field experiment was carried out to study the effect of foliar spray of micronutrients and growth regulators on seed quality of onion during rabi 2016-17 and 2017-18 at Seed Unit, UAS, Raichur.
