  • Astrocaryum aculeatum is a palm tree species native to the tropical regions of South America, exploited commercially by local farmers for the pulp extracted from its fruits. The objective of this research was to compare the genetic diversity between adult plants and seedlings from open-pollinated seeds, quantify the pollen flow and dispersal, the spatial genetic structure, and the effective size of a population that has been continuously harvested for its fruits.

  • Forest trees can occupy extensive geography and environmentally highly variable areas which result in high genetic variability in the direction of pressure from natural selection. At the same time, the majority of conifer species are wind-pollinated from both short and long distances, resulting in wide-spread gene flow, which can lead to maladaptation to local conditions.

  • Cleistogamic flowers are a main barrier in pollen dispersal for cross-pollination necessary in wheat hybrid breeding. The aim of our study was to gain new knowledge on the biology of wheat flowering, in particular on the differences between the cleisto- and chasmogamic forms which has certainly cognitive significance, but it can also be used in practice when seeking a female and male ideotypes for cross hybridization.

  • Mustard (Brassica spp.), family cruciferae are the major oilseed crop grow throughout India for edible oil. It is an open pollinated crop and honeybees are effective pollinators for open pollinated crops because of a lot of nectar and pollens are available on the flowers of mustard. The studies were conducted during rabi 2013-14 and 2014-15 at ARS, Kota to enhance the yield of mustard through honey bee pollinator. Mustard variety “Bio-902” was grown following all recommended agronomic practices without spraying through the crop season.

  • A comparative study on 16 brinjal genotypes (15 hybrids and 1 open pollinated variety) for flowering and yield attributing parameters was conducted at Indira Gandhi Krishi Viswavidhyalaya, Raipur, during rabi 2012-2013. Pusa Hybrid-6 is found to be statistically superior in earliness over the other hybrids in days to 50% flowering (55.67) and days to first picking (83). Earliness is of economic importance as in case of vegetables, early crop fetch good price. Percent fruit set is highest in 2012/BRRHYB-4 (61.94%) which is also the highest bearing hybrid in terms of yield per plant (2.60kg).

  • A comparative study on 16 brinjal genotypes (15 hybrids and 1 open pollinated variety) for growth and yield attributing parameters was conducted at Indira Gandhi Krishi Viswavidhyalaya, Raipur, during rabi 2012-2013.The three tallest hybrids were 2012/BRRHYB-5 and 2012/BRRHYB-7 which are also the hybrids with most number of branches 120 days after transplanting. The fruits of Kashi Sandesh and Swarna Mani Black had thickest pericarp and are also statistically superior in fruit girth. In the present findings, the higher pericarp thickness may be due to the higher fruit girth.

  • The objective of this work was to study the different breeding systems, seed viability and seed germination in four nerium Cultivars (Nerium oleander L.). Different breeding systems like natural open pollination, autogamy, controlled pollinations and geitenogamy were studied in two seasons. In both the season of pollination no fruit set was observed in autogamy. In case of natural open pollination both the season of pollination up to five per cent of fruit set was observed in nerium cultivars.

  • The maximum number of fruits set was recorded in open-pollination + hand-pollination treatment (80.42% and 77.14%) and open-pollination (78.85% and 75.00%), followed by hand-pollination (65.42% and 61.42%) in C-1076 and C-1106 cultivar respectively. Without insect pollination treatment resulted in zero per cent fruit set in both the pumpkin cultivars (C-1076 and C-1106).

  • Flowers open at sunrise and close at sunset, establishing a circadian floral movement rhythm to facilitate pollination as part of reproduction. By the coordination of endogenous factors and environmental stimuli, such as circadian clock, photoperiod, light and temperature, an appropriate floral movement rhythm has been established; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

  • Wood basic density (WBD), the biomass of plant cell walls per unit volume, is an important trait for elite tree selection in kraft pulp production. Here, we investigated the correlation between WBD and wood volumes or wood properties using 98 open-pollinated, 2.4 to 2.8 year-old hybrid Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla x E. grandis). Transcript levels of lignocellulose biosynthesis-related genes were studied.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the effect of pollination methods on fruit set at Horticulture garden, BAU, Sabour. The effect of self, open and cross-pollination was studied in the four cultivars of litchi i.e. Deshi, Purbi, Bedana and Kasba. Five panicles/replication were bagged at flowering stage for selfing. Some panicles were tagged and left opened for open-pollination and some panicles having female flowers were bagged for making cross-combinations.

  • Oenothera biennis L., commonly known as Evening Primrose as flowers open in the evening. Inflorescence is racemose (spike) and flowering continues for about 3 months. Circular floral nectary of translucent colour are present at the point of attachment of petals and hypanthium. Pollen are triporate, of variable sizes held together by viscin threads. Sepals colour change from green to yellowish green, act as indicator of anther dehiscene in the morning in closed conditions and anthesis in the evening.

  • Chhattisgarh, the 26th state of the Indian Union came into existence on November 1st, 2000. In Chhattisgarh, maize is a kharif season crop and second most important crop next to paddy in terms of both area and production. The state has got very good potential for maize but the productivity is very low due to cultivation of open pollinated varieties (OPVs) and improper input management practices. The real potential can be realized by the adoption of hybrid maize especially single cross hybrids with full package of practices.

  • Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops under solanaceous group which can be grown both under open field conditions and greenhouses. Tomato has achieved high popularity especially in the recent years because of lycopene’s anti-oxidative activities and anti-cancerous functions. The cultivated tomato has been used in genetic studies because of the ease with which it can be easily manipulated and also its diversity present within the population.
