Optical character recognition

This paper presents an end-to-end deep convolutional recurrent neural network solution for Khmer Optical Character Recognition (OCR) task. The proposed solution uses a sequenceto-sequence (Seq2Seq) architecture with an attention mechanism. The encoder extracts visual features from an input text-line image via layers of convolutional blocks and a layer of Gated Recurrent Units (GRU).

Presented how to extend its architecture to form Dilated Pyramidal Residual Network (DPRN), for this long-standing research topic and evaluate it on the problems of automatic speech recognition and optical character recognition. Together, they formed a multi-modal video retrieval framework for Vietnamese Broadcast News. Experiments were conducted on caption images and speech frames extracted from VTV broadcast videos. Results showed that DPRN was not only end-to-end trainable but also performed well in sequence recognition tasks.

In the paper, two different convolutional network architectures for recognising Vietnamese text in natural scenes are presentd. Experiments are conducted to compare the performance of two networks in reading Vietnamese restaurant signs. Experimental results show that the deeper network outperforms the other in recognising accuracy and computational time.

We have adapted a classification approach coming from optical character recognition research to the task of speech emotion recognition. The classification approach enjoys the representational power of a syntactic method and efficiency of statistical classification. The syntactic part implements a tree grammar inference algorithm. We have extended this part of the algorithm with various edit costs to penalise more important features with higher edit costs for being outside the interval, which tree automata learned at the inference stage.
